The starting pitching matchup for the O’s and Rays tonight was pretty evenly fought but the bullpen matchup was noticibly one-sided in favor of Tampa Bay. It was in the eighth inning that O’s relievers Ryan Webb and Evan Meek would both contribute to Baltimore’s three game winning being broken by giving up three runs combind and losing the game to the Rays 3-0. Tampa Bay also broke a three game losing streak with this win.
Rays starter Alex Cobb who since the All-Star break has had the best ERA in the majors, earned a no decision tonight pitching seven innings, giving up no runs on six hits and striking out six. This was the 7th time his season that Alex Cobb left the game without giving up an earned run which is strange considering he only has nine wins on the season and could maybe have won some more games for the Rays if he had stayed in.
Orioles starter Wei-Yin Chen came into this game tonight on an incredible hot streak going 7-1 with a 3.30 ERA in his last 10 starts. Unfortunately due to lack of run support from his offense he was only able to earn himself a no decision despite pitching six scoreless innings and only giving up four hits. Chen also did a good job shutting down the Rays Ben Zobrist who was hitting .435 against Chen in his career; he was held to only to one infield hit.
Tonight was the 10th time this season the O’s have been shutout. Baltimore hopes to bounce back from this series opening loss tomorrow in the afternoon at 1:05 pm/ET. Probables for this game will be Kevin Gausman (BAL 7-7 3.93) vs. Drew Smyly (TB 9-10 3.31).
