Training camp and the opening of the NFL Preseason. This is the time of year when optimism reigns supreme. Every team is looking to build a winner. Some organizations feel like they are close to contending while others know that they are probably not quite there. Still other teams have much higher expectations. In places like Seattle, New England, and Denver, anything short of a Super Bowl victory will be a disappointment. For NFL fans however, they all want to believe that this could be the year for their favorite team. In Minnesota, Viking fans are hungry for a legitimate playoff run and the Vikings are one those teams that believe they are close. I agree. One of the biggest reasons for hope in the twin cities is Teddy Bridgewater. The quarterback finished the 2014 campaign very strong, completing over 70% of his passes during the last five games of his rookie season. On Sunday night he opened the NFL Preseason looking like he was just continuing that run. Teddy only stayed on the field for one drive, but did look very sharp during that time out there. Bridgewater not only hit 5 of 6 passes, he also moved around the field with a great degree of confidence, rolling out while keeping his eyes down the field, and if nothing developed, he tucked it and picked up positive yards. The Vikings drove the ball inside the Steelers’ 12 yard line, but failed to convert on 4th and 1. If it were a regular season game, they would have kicked a field goal. Overall an excellent showing by Minnesota’s 2nd year signal caller.
Now before fans start making Super Bowl, or even playoff plans, they need to take a step back. It’s the first game of the year and it doesn’t count. That being said, the Vikings appear to have at least one thing that every organization covets; a young quarterback that looks to be the future. There a lot of different pieces that will factor in to the success of this team in 2015, but the most important part of the puzzle is Teddy Bridgewater.
