The Baltimore Orioles had been waiting since after the four game series with the Chicago White Sox April 28th -May 1st to face a team with a winning record. They would do so tonight by starting a three game series with the Seattle Mariners at Camden Yards where the O’s hold the best home record in the Major Leagues at 16-6. Seattle would snap their three game losing streak by shutting out the O’s 10-0, handing Baltimore its third shutout of the season. The Mariners improve to 6-1 against the American League East and have recorded their third shutout of the season.
Veteran starting pitcher for O’s Ubaldo Jimenez came into his 4th consecutive start at home with a 6.11 ERA in his previous three starts. Jimenez finished the night with his shortest outing of the season going four and one-third of an inning giving up six runs on five hits; while walking four and striking out four; he also threw a ball away trying to check a runner at first. His record on the year drops to 2-4. Reliever Brian Matusz also struggled tonight giving up four runs in one and two-thirds of an inning. Baltimore was only able to muster two hits against Seattle pitching; the lone hits for the O’s were by Matt Wieters with a single in the 5th inning and Chris Davis with a double in the 6th inning.
Third baseman Kyle Seager homered and drove in three runs for Seattle in the 5th inning where the M’s batting around the lineup. Mariners Designated hitter and former Oriole Nelson Cruz was 0-for-12 against Baltimore’s Jimenez in the last five years but had a big night tonight driving in three runs against him, five total in the game after a two-run homer in the 6th. Robinson Cano went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI’s and three runs scored, and Seth Smith went 1-for-3 with two walks and three runs scored. Starting pitcher Wade Miley pitched six scoreless innings for the M’s only allowing two hits and three walks to the O’s. Miley (4-2) has now pitched at least six innings in five straight starts and has won four of his last five.
Game two of this three game series will be Wednesday 7:05 PM/ET. Starting pitchers for that game will be: Taijuan Walker (SEA 2-2 2.63 ERA) vs. Chris Tillman (BAL 5-1 2.58 ERA).
