Charlie Strong’s last stance. Today, against TCU maybe be his last game Coaching the Longhorns. He has been with the Longhorns for 3 years with a sub 500 record. Been to only one Bowl game and lost that game. He had a major challenge coming to Texas and taking over for Brown after 16 years with Texas and a National Championship.
Mack didn’t give Strong much to start with, recruiting was down, as well as morale. It was time for a change Mack lost, his Mojo. This game would have been Mack’s last recruiting class. I measure recruiting classes not based on status coming in but status going out. This class has no future first round draft picks or Heisman potentials. Strong in the last 2 years has had 2 top 10 recruiting classes. With a possible Heisman Trophy candidate and potential 1st round draft choice.
Time was not in Strong’s favor. He did a great job at Louisville. Putting several players in the NFL and a Heisman candidate. He also had a winning record, when he left Louisville. Personally, I think Strong should have stayed, if He would have possible be in the playoffs the past 2 years.
Strong is best in the East, specially in the Southeast. it is just too hard to get players to leave that area and come play Football in Texas. He is just now starting to recruit well in the State of Texas. His starting QB, Shane is great, along with some other key recruits in the past 3 years. The problem with Strong time is running out.
Texas, alum expects ever year to be a contender for a national Championship and that’s been almost 10 years. Strong didn’t get the support of Red McCombs big time donor. Losing to Kansas last week didn’t help things. The hiring of his Offensive Coordinator,Gilbert was a great thing. But, not firing, his Defensive Coordinator, Bedford after last year one was a bad thing.
