Meeting for the second time this week and the third time in 15 days the Washington Capitals and the Buffalo Sabres played their finale of their season series. In the end the Caps would complete the season series three-game sweep tonight winning by a score of 4-1. Washington is now 8-5-2 in their last 15 games.
After a scoreless first period Caps winger T.J. Oshie scored the first tally of the game in the second period. This was Oshie’s first point since coming back from the injured list, the goal was assisted by centers Jay Beagle and Nicklas Backstrom; Beagle’s assist was his third point in three games and Backstrom ended the night with two assists. Later in the second period a milestone was made as Caps rookie winger Jakub Vrana scored his NHL point, goal and power play goal all in one night with one shot scoring on a Washington man-up advantage. Vrana’s goal was assisted by center Evgeny Kuznetsov and defensemen Dmirty Orlov; Kuznetsov now has four assists in his past three games. Defensemen John Carlson scored his first goal of the 2016-17 season on a power play late in the third period, Carlson’s first goal since last season’s Conference Quaterfinals in Pittsburgh on May 10th. Marcus Johansson scored his 12th goal of the season on an open net goal and added an assist in the game.
Caps starting goalie tonight Philip Grubauer recorded 27 saves and improves his season record to 4-1-1. Sabres goalie Robin Lehner stopped 25 shots and drops his season record to 5-9-4. Buffalo’s lone goal tonight was scored by Kyle Okposo in the mid-3rd period on a power play for his 9th goal of the season and his second in three games. Goal was assisted by Rasmus Ristolainen who has five points in his past three games and Ryan O’Reilly who has four assists in his past three games.
Washington will try to keep their winning streak alive on Sunday night when they host the Vancouver Canucks. Game time 5:00 PM/ET.
