Sens stave of elimination with win 4-3 win in third overtime
Posted on 23 Apr 2010 by Amit Mann.
The Ottawa Senators staved of elimination with a 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins in the third overtime of Game 5. Matt Carkner’s, that’s right Matt Carkner, point shot which deflected off the body of a Pittsburgh player found its way into the net to send the game back to Ottawa on Saturday. The game was the second-longest in the history of Mellon Arena (Philadelphia’s Keith Primeau s...

Pens gaining form with 4-2 win over Senators
Posted on 19 Apr 2010 by Amit Mann.
Pittsburgh was up to there old tricks in Game 3 as Crosby and Guerin both had goals and assists in their 4-2 win over the Senators at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa. Crosby now has 7 points in the series and is well on his way to a possible Conn Smythe should Pittsburgh advance that far. Alexei Ponikarovsky scored his first goal of the playoffs in the first period, with a wrist shot that beat Brian...

Pens look to rebound in Game 2
Posted on 15 Apr 2010 by Amit Mann.
I expressed some concern with the Pittsburgh Penguins heading into the playoffs and in Game 1, they proved my point. Marc-Andre Fleury was not good, giving up 5 goals on 26 and the team defence was abysmal as on two occasions Senators were able to go to the net untouched for goals. Let’s start with the good things from Game 1 and work our way down: Power play The Penguins forwards did a great...

Pittsburgh vs.Ottawa preview
Posted on 13 Apr 2010 by Amit Mann.
The Pittsburgh Penguins and Ottawa Senators will meet in the playoffs for the third time in the past four years and both teams seem comfortable with the match-up. On one hand there is the defending champions who trampled over Ottawa in their cup run last season, while Ottawa feels they can give Pittsburgh a run for their money based on their 2-2 record during the regular season. On the injury f...

Penguins not so great heading into the playoffs
Posted on 11 Apr 2010 by Amit Mann.
With Pittsburgh finishing in fourth place they will welcome the Ottawa Senators into Mellon Arena for Game 1 on Wednesday or Thursday. In the last game of the season against the Islanders, Sidney Crosby collected two goals to tie Steven Stamkos with 51 for the year, making him a co-owner of the Maurice Richard Trophy for the first time in his career. It’s a bitter win for Crosby as Stamkos’...

Round Four!

Evgeni Malkin and Sergei Gonchar returned to the Penguins line-up on Sunday, putting to bed any rumbles of severe injury to either player. Malkin impressed in his first game back, collecting a goal and an assist in Pittsburgh’s 4-3 win over Atlanta on Sunday. While tied with the Devils, the Penguins currently sit fourth in the Eastern Conference since New Jersey owns the tie-breaker. New Jers...

Pens re-sign Letang
Posted on 30 Mar 2010 by Amit Mann.
The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-signed defencemen Kris Letang to a four-year contract worth $3.5 million a year. The 22-year-old has three goals and 24 assists in 67 games while averaging 21:30 minutes of ice time per game. Letang is a young defenceman who was a member of Pittsburgh’s Stanley Cup wining team last season. At only 22, Letang has yet to hit his peak and will continue to get bett...

After losing two in a row to Detroit and Washington, the Pittsburgh Penguins have taken back first place in the Atlantic with wins over Philadelphia and Toronto. The Penguins are now two points up on New Jersey but the Devils still hold one game in hand along with the tie-breaker. Sidney Crosby had a combined five points in the two games as he is doing his best to make up for the absence of Evg...

Pens 0-2 vs. playoff foes
Posted on 24 Mar 2010 by Amit Mann.
The Pens had playoff type games against the Red Wings and Caps this week and unfortunately for them, they came up with the short end of the stick both times. Malkin missed both games because of his ailing foot which made Pittsburgh slim down center and it was exposed against Detroit. Pittsburgh lost 3-1 as Zetterberg collected two goals and an assist while Crosby was stifled by a Detroit team d...

Despite Malkin’s return, Pens lose in OT
Posted on 20 Mar 2010 by Amit Mann.
Evgeni Malkin returned to the line-up but it wasn’t enough to will the Penguins to a victory against a hungry Hurricanes team as they lost 3-2. Jamie Mcbain scored with .9 left in overtime on a shot from the point that was deflected by a Pittsburgh stick. While bleak, Carolina continues to work at making the playoffs. The Hurricanes are now eight points back of Boston for the final post-seaso...

Pens lose once again to the Devils
Posted on 18 Mar 2010 by Amit Mann.
The Penguins five-game road trip has been rocky to say the least. They have lost both games to the Devils and suffered an overtime-loss to Carolina. They picked up a win against Tampa but my main concern is loosing both games to the Devils. Pittsburgh couldn’t pick up a victory against their division foes as New Jersey won the season series 6-0. With the win last night, the Devils took over f...

Pittsburgh stronger than ever?

Alexei Ponikarovsky made his debut with the Penguins Saturday and looked solid while doing it. He scored the sixth and final goal in Pittsburgh's 6-3 win over Dallas and assisted on Evgeni Malkin's goal Sunday against Boston. The former Leaf appeared to cut his arm while blocking a shot from a Boston defenceman but despite what Evanka Osmak thinks, he did return to that game. Pony has been able...
