Big week ahead
Posted on 2 Jun 2009 by Brian Hutton.
The Rangers currently sit at a 30-20 record and tonight they begin a huge, huge, HUGE roadtrip in New York and Boston. I've pointed out several big series already but this is easily the biggest test the Rangers have faced so far. If this team wants to prove themselves as a legit contender in the American League, and solidify their lead in the AL West, they have to play well against two ...

Eh…

I'm not quite sure which was more deflating, losing all three games in Detroit or getting blown away by the Yankees in the first game of an important series. Phil Hughes made short work of the Rangers, shutting them out for 8 innings with only 101 pitches. This game was the perfect example of where the Rangers' season could go horribly wrong. Starting pitching gives up a big lead e...

Home Sweep!
Posted on 19 May 2009 by Brian Hutton.
I honestly cannot remember the last time the Rangers swept a homestand, not that I'm complaining. I said last week that the weekend series against the Angels provided the Rangers with an opportunity to make a statement, and the team responded better than could have been expected. Outside of the 9th inning on Friday, the Rangers won a series of close games. The Angels had some unfortunat...

First Place

This team is really starting to convince me. Two walk off wins in a row and the pitching staff continues to impress. Matt Harrison's scoreless streak ended at 22 innings, but he threw his second consecutive complete game to earn the win. Chris Davis has started using a heavier bat in order to slow down is swing and the results so far have been impressive, as Davis continues to improve h...

Scattershooting

A combination of rain delays and exams have made it difficult for me to discuss the many thoughts I've had watching Rangers' baseball the past week. 1. I love what I'm seeing out of Kevin Millwood. He is currently leading Zack Greinke in innings pitched (By a single out), currently holds a 3:1 K/BB ratio and a 2.78 ERA. Millwood appears as if he is genuinely motivated by Rya...

4-3 Road Trip
Posted on 28 Apr 2009 by Brian Hutton.
It's hard to complain about a 4-3 road trip that including stops against the red-hot Blue Jays. After listening to the two innings on the radio, I was fully prepared to write about how disappointing Matt Harrison has been this season. However, after giving up four runs in the first two innings Harrison sat down 18 of his last 19 batters, going 7 innings, 7 hits, 1 walk, 3 strikeouts and ...

Progress

Losses like last night are always hard to stomach but the Rangers appear to be headed in the right direction. Matt Harrison looked average to below average once again, and the back of rotation needs some help. Scott Feldman is back in the rotation because of an injury to Kris Benson, which seems like the direction the team should have gone day one. Kinsler's bat remains on fire and you ...

Derek Holland has arrived
Posted on 19 Apr 2009 by Brian Hutton.
Derek Holland is in Arlington sooner than later and I’m really pretty shocked. Not only is the Rangers’ bullpen bad, it’s so bad that the team has decided to blow a year of service time on Holland so he can pitch out of the bullpen in April. Holland has had exactly ONE AAA start and only 4 Career starts in AA (including the playoffs). He got shelled in his first Oklahoma start, givi...

Much better

I turn to Comedy Central for my weekly dose of South Park and the Rangers' offense explodes. Ian Kinsler hits for the cycle and sets several club records. Nelson Cruz just missed his second grand slam of the game in the 8th inning, driving 2 runs in with a double instead. Just about everyone gets involved in the offense with the final of19-4 as the Rangers blow out the Orioles. The win ...

Well, that’s better

I turn it over to Comedy Central for my weekly South Park screening and the Rangers put up 10 runs. Nice to see the bats wake up after a few off games. Kinsler hits for the cycle and Nelson Cruz just missed his second Grand Slam, driving in 2 runs with a double in the 8th. Just about everyone got in on the action as the Rangers win 19-6. The Rangers have an off-day Thursday before opening a ...

3-4
Posted on 14 Apr 2009 by Brian Hutton.
The initial optimism dies down as the Rangers remind everyone they don't really have a bullpen. Moving Feldman to relief has not turned out well thus far as Kris Benson showed nothing in his first appearance. Chris Davis finally showed up, ending a 1/23 start to the year. Davis is a personal favorite and I would expect his production to improve significantly. Padilla and Harrison looke...

Early Analysis
Posted on 11 Apr 2009 by Brian Hutton.
It wasn't as pretty the second time around, but a win is a win. The Rangers came out on top 8-5 Monday, led by Marlon Byrd and Elvis Andrus. Monday's game went about as well as could be expected, with Kevin Millwood throwing 7.0 IP, 1 ER after a slow start. Better yet, the Rangers' offense tagged former AL Cy Young Winner Cliff Lee. One problem for the 2008 Rangers was their ability to hit ...
