The Mustangs burned the Black Knights for 45 yards on the first play from scrimmage when Kyle Padron found Aldrick Robinson downfield.

Here we go again, right?

We saw this against Air Force, Notre Dame, and Navy in recent weeks. Then, after a 6 yard completion by Padron, the complexion of the game changed completely.

Zach Watts got to Padron for a sack and forced a fumble, scooped up by Josh McNary who was escorted by Stephen Anderson 55 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 Army lead with 13:33 remaining in the first quarter. The two seniors, McNary and Anderson, were major factors in a huge effort by the Army defense. They were the epitome of “bend, but don’t break,” seemingly forcing turnovers every time they were backed up against their goal line.

After a missed field goal by SMU kicker Matt Szymanski, the Black Knights took over on their own 20 yard line and drove 80 yards for a touchdown. The eight-play drive featured four different rushers, a Trent Steelman completion to Davyd Brooks for a first down, and was aided by an SMU pass interference penalty. The drive was capped by a 13 yard touchdown run by Malcolm Brown. Alex Carlton’s extra point attempt was blocked by Marcus Hunt, leaving the score at 13-0 in favor of the Black Knights with 5:26 remaining in the first quarter.

SMU looked poised to answer on their next drive, but Stephen Anderson intercepted a Padron pass at the Army 15 yard line to preserve the Army lead. After a Jonathan Bulls punt, Padron was intercepted again, this time by Josh Jackson.

An Alex Carlton field goal with 2:39 left in the first half gave Army a 16-0 lead.

After Army’s opening possession of the second half ended with a punt, SMU was able to drive 92 yards on 13 plays to cut the lead to 16-7. The Black Knights forced SMU to eat up six minutes on the drive, leaving 2:56 remaining in the third quarter with each team only having one second half possession.

Another Jonathan Bulls punt set up a 74 yard drive by the Mustangs, capped by a Padron touchdown pass to Darius Johnson, which cut Army’s lead to 16-14 with 9:20 left in the game.

Deep in their own territory, Army was only able to eat up a minute of the remaining time while going three-and-out. The Black Knights were bailed out by a 57 yard punt by Bulls, which gave Army’s defense a reasonable chance at slowing down the second half SMU onslaught. The mustangs did drive down to the Army 30 yard line, but Szymanski was off target again.

After picking up a first down which allowed them to continue ticking time off the clock, Army sealed the game with a gutsy call. The Black Knights rolled Steelman to his right, completing a 22 yard pass to Davyd Brooks on third down. Steelman then took a knee on the next snap, and the bowl victory was sealed.

What Went Right: Defense, turnovers. The defense gutted out this win against a high-powered offense that was averaging almost 26 points a game, and held them to 14 points. The defense was aided by three turnovers – two interceptions and McNary’s fumble return for a touchdown.

What Went Wrong: The offense did not put up as many points as was anticipated, but they got the job done. It wasn’t pretty, but in the end it worked.

Player of the Game: LB Stephen Anderson. This was difficult. McNary had the big touchdown, Hassin was consistent again and broke the 1,000 yard mark rushing, but Anderson was all over the field in his final outing as the leader of Army’s defense. His performance, and that of the defense in general, was a microcosm of his time at West Point. He battled for four quarters, and was able to grind out a win. Anderson finished the day with 14 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss including half a sack, and the big interception deep in Army territory. His graduation will leave a gaping hole in the middle of the Army defense, and from a leadership perspective.

Final Word: Army accomplished some great things with this game. They were able to bring winning football back to the United States Military Academy, finishing 7-6. This is the first winning record for the Black Knights since 1996. They defeated a team that entered the game with a winning record for the first time since 2005. Jared Hassin became the first sophomore to rush for 1,000 yards at Army since Mike Mayweather in 1988. With the victory, Ellerson became the first coach to win 12 games in his first two years at Army since Tom Cahill did in 1966-67. The win was a fitting end for the senior class, who did what they set out to do – bring winning football back to West Point.

Coach Rich Ellerson was also able to beat out a very formidable opponent in his former teammate, June Jones. Jones and SMU honored the Black Knights by wearing black uniforms during the game, a very classy move by the program. Jones has his team moving in the right direction and Padron looks like he will grow into a very good quarterback.

A lot will be changing before next season in terms of personnel, which I will take a look at later this week. For now, heading into the 2011 season with a winning record under his belt has to be a boost to Coach Ellerson.

With six wins, the Black Knights are in a bowl game for the first time since 1996. There have been big wins, missed opportunities, and a few bad defeats, but the program is clearly moving forward. The tilt with SMU presents a chance to get a bowl victory, which would be a nice feather in Rich Ellerson’s cap.

When and Where: Thursday, December 30 in Dallas, Texas. Kickoff is set for 12:05 p.m. ET.

Series History: 2-0 in favor of Army. The first meeting was in 1928, the last in 1967.

Matchup: This matchup is interesting because each team will be facing different versions of offenses they faced earlier this season.

The Mustangs faced Navy earlier this season, giving up 253 yards rushing on 4.6 yards per carry in a 28-21 loss. The Navy option is run with a more off-tackle read than the Army attack, but the Mustangs issues with over-pursuit and poor angles does not bode well for them. You can be sure the coaching staff has attempted to clean that up in preparation for Army’s offense.

Army faced Hawaii earlier this season, the previous stop for June Jones. The difference is that Hawaii always uses its rushing attack as an accessory – something to keep defenses honest. SMU has used the run effectively this season, with running back Zach Line piling up 1,391 yards on the ground. Even quarterback Kyle Padron has rushed for 254 yards in addition to his 3,526 yards passing. Army was able to adjust to Hawaii’s attack after being overwhelmed early, and the coaching staff has surely taken into account the adjustments made in that game while preparing for this matchup.

Coaching Connection: Ellerson and Junes have an interesting connection – Ellerson and Jones were teammates at Hawaii in 1974. They even served together on the Hawaii coaching staff in 1983. The two are now in the business of resurrecting programs – SMU was 1-11 the season prior to Jones arriving on campus, Army was 3-9 the season before Ellerson took over. Now the two square off in a bowl game, something neither program considered a possibility a few seasons ago.

Players to Watch: FB Jared Hassin: SMU gave up 95 yards and two touchdowns to Navy fullback Alex Teich earlier this year, and expect Army to ride Hassin. They will want to control the game and keep Kyle Padron and the SMU offense on the sideline, so look for them to depend on Hassin for consistent yardage. Hassin currently sits 69 yards short of 1,000 for the season.

QB Kyle Padron: SMU has a potent passing attack, and Padron orchestrates it efficiently. He has passed for 3,526 yards and 29 touchdowns so far this season. The Army secondary has been susceptible to big plays all season (see: Air Force, Notre Dame, Navy). The secondary will need to play its best game of the year and get some help if they hope to keep the SMU offense under 30 points.

Potential X-Factor: DE Josh McNary: The best pass rusher on the Army team, the secondary needs his help to contain the SMU passing attack. If he can at least pressure Padron and possibly throw in a few sacks, it could make a huge difference for Army’s defense.

Prediction: I think this is a tough matchup for Army. Playing what amounts to a road game in SMU’s stadium, against a potent passing attack. The Black Knights have been stung by the big play all season, and SMU can create them. Army will need to pressure Padron and ride Jared Hassin if they want to pull this one out.

There are some milestones on the line for Army, in addition to Hassin approaching 1,000 yards rushing. If the team can gain 175 yards on the ground, well under their season average of 256 yards per game, the 2010 team will move into the top 10 rushing offenses in Army history. A win would also give Army its first winning season since the 1996 team.

In the end, I think the Black Knights play well but come up a bit short.

SMU 35, Army 28

Add another group of Army football players to the growing list of student-athletes without a win over archrival Navy.

The Black Knights got off to a slow start, and some sloppy execution on offense led to untimely turnovers that ultimately sealed their fate.

The big play killed the Army defense again on Saturday, with Ricky Dobbs connecting on a 77 yard touchdown pass to John Howell. Navy would score on a 32 yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter to take a 17-0 lead.

After a Ricky Dobbs fumble, Army finally picked up their first down of the game on the way to scoring their first touchdown in the annual rivalry matchup when Trent Steelman found Malcolm Brown for a 5 yard score. Another fumble gave Army the ball back again, and the Black Knights drove down to the Navy 3 yard line. Seemingly poised to cut Navy’s lead to just three points right before halftime, a sloppy mesh with fullback Jared Hassin jarred the ball in Steelman’s hands. He retained possession, but as he attempted to break through the pile it was knocked loose and Wyat Middleton returned the fumble 98 yards for a touchdown.

An emphatic proverbial “nail in the coffin.”

Army would tack on a field goal on their first possession of the second half. Navy extended the lead to 31-10 on their first possession of the fourth quarter. The Black Knights closed out the day’s scoring when Steelman found Brown again, this time for a 45 yard touchdown.

What Went Right: Forcing turnovers. Navy fumbled three times, all recovered by the Black Knights. All three fumbles were lost by start quarterback Ricky Dobbs. The turnovers set up the most important Army possessions – their first touchdown and the drive that ended with a Steelman fumble being returned 98 yards for a touchdown.

What Went Wrong: Giveaways. Sloppiness. Big plays on defense. Army’s option attack looked a little off in its timing, and it shows in the fumble category. The fumbles were caused by poor meshes, which is unacceptable and elementary for an option team. On defense, we again saw the Black Knights struck by the big play.

Player of the Game: Stephen Anderson. The captain was emotional coming into the game, and I’m sure it eats away at him that he lost against Navy again. He played his heart out, forcing a fumble by Ricky Dobbs on the opening possession of the game and recovering another. He finished with 12 tackles, and half a sack.

Final Word: This was a good measuring stick for Army. Obviously, they are not where they need to be yet. Still, plenty of pride can be taken in a resurgent season and a bowl trip. Hopefully the Black Knights can finish strong against SMU.

When and Where: Kickoff is set for 2:40 p.m. at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The game will be aired on CBS.

Series History: 54-49-7 in favor of the Midshipmen, including eight straight wins over the Black Knights entering this season.

Matchup: This group of Army seniors has made it a point to be different. They have pledged over and over again that this would be the group that turned around Army football.

So far they’ve done it.

After the surprising success the Black Knights experienced in their first season under Rich Ellerson, the encore performance has been even better. The progress this team has made is easy to recognize. A few plays in tight games kept this season from being among the best in Army’s storied history. Still, they do not dull the shining accomplishments of this group, the first Army team to be a part of the bowl picture since 1996.

Yet, the Army season will be decided this Saturday.

Ultimately every Army season is judged by this game, the final matchup of the regular season. Army-Navy. The purest rivalry in all of sports.

The past five graduating classes have left West Point without a win over Navy. The gap between the two programs has been lessened over the past two seasons. For the Black Knights to move forward, they had to look back.

The return of the triple option has been a huge success for Army, giving them an explosive offense for the first time in years. This Saturday, they will face a Navy team that also employs the triple option.

It’s the last Saturday of the regular season in college football, and there is only one game on. Turn on CBS this Saturday and return to the golden days of college football – power running games and players not concerned with going to the NFL. Players that suit up for the love of the game, and the love of competition. And young men who love their country and are willing to serve it with honor.

This game will not be a high-flying aerial display with scores in the 50-point range on each side. But it might just be the best game all year.

Player to Watch: FB Jared Hassin. Hassin is closing in on 1,000 yards rushing, and has been the rock of the Army offense all season. Army strayed from Hassin a few weeks ago against Notre Dame – with disastrous results. Army needs to pound Hassin into the teeth of the Navy defense and trust that he will pick up consistent yardage. Committing to him will be the key to eventually opening up the outside run game and opportunities through the air.

Potential X-Factor: WR Davyd Brooks. Brooks has been a bit quiet this season, but he still has the speed to make big plays. Expect Army to throw the ball 8-10 times on Saturday, and a shot downfield to brooks would not be surprising. Last season Army needed a big play to spark the offense against Navy. This season they have some playmakers who can do that.

Prediction: It’s time for Army to break through. This game has become a mental block for the Black Knights, and if they are to move forward as a program they need to get it out of the way. With all the great accomplishments this team has had so far, it would be a shame for them to have to wait another season to beat Navy. This group of seniors knows how much this game means to the program. Army pulls out a tight win.

Army 28, Navy 24

The Mustangs were relegated to the Armed Forces Bowl after losing the C-USA Title game.

Former Hawaii Head Coach June Jones will lead the Mustangs; having turned around the program after the NCAA death penalty crippled the program. The Mustangs have now received bowl bids in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1983 and 1984.

Rich Ellerson is in the midst of his own turnaround effort at Army, and his Hawaii connections make for an interesting storyline between the two coaches.

The game will be played at SMU’s stadium. Usually the game is held at TCU, but due to stadium renovations it is being held at SMU this year.

After a Donovan Travis interception in the end zone gave the Army offense the ball on their own 20 yard line, the Black Knights marched 78 yards on 17 plays, chewing up almost nine minutes of the first quarter. An Alex Carlton field goal gave Army a 3-0 lead.

The formula worked. Employ the “bend but don’t break” defense, run the ball, control the clock, and come away with points. Mix in a pass here or there to keep the defense honest.

It all went downhill from there.

After Notre Dame knotted the game at 3-3 with 14:50 remaining in the second quarter, an Army three-and-out and a 12 yard punt gave Notre Dame good field position, on the Army 40 yard line.

Notre Dame went to the air, with a 35 yard completion on third and six setting them up on the Army 1 yard line. Robert Hughes punched it in from there, giving Notre Dame a 10-3 lead.

The next few possessions, which proved to be crucial, are where I think the coaching staff for Army faltered.

You have been a running football team the whole season. That is what has gotten you this far, so ride it out. If you are going to get beat, get beat doing what you do best. Run the ball.

Instead Army comes out on first down and throws. Incomplete, putting themselves in a second and long yardage situation. Two running plays did not net the necessary 10 yards, and Army was forced to punt again.

Five plays later, another Notre Dame touchdown was on the board again, 17-3 Irish with 8:01 remaining in the first half.

The team traded punts, then with barely any time remaining the Black Knights found a little success on the ground, picking up a first down before time expired in the second quarter.

Coming out of halftime, down two touchdowns, time to get back to your identity and try to get back in his game. Right?

The team ranked 120th in the country in passing came out gunning.

On first down Jared Hassin picked up 3 yards. Second down and seven yards, time to ride the option and get another solid gain. Or, if you are Army last night, throw for it.

An incomplete pass on second down and an interception returned for a touchdown on third down put the nail in the coffin. A David Ruffer field goal with 5:23 remaining in the third quarter closed out the day’s scoring.

What Went Right: The running game (when they allowed it). Army 3.1 yards per rush. Not setting the world on fire, but against a team like Notre Dame you have to expect that. Just keep pounding the rock. Eventually you will find a seam for a big play. The option was working very well the first drive. Then Army decided to start throwing the ball on the early downs and sabotage their own attack.

What Went Wrong: Play calling. Not to be an armchair coach, but why did Jared Hassin have eight carries in this game? Hassin has been Army’s workhorse all year, and probably the closest thing they have physically to a Notre Dame player other than Stephen Anderson. He averaged 2.9 yards a carry for the game. That’s fine. Give him the ball. He is your best offensive weapon. Use him. And on the first drive of the second half, backs against the wall, when he picks up three yards on first down? Give it to him again. Run the option. Just don’t throw it. There’s a reason you are 120th in the nation in passing.

Play calling was an issue defensively too. Going into the game, I doubt anyone thought it would be a good idea to have the Army defenders in man coverage against the Notre Dame receivers. Well, we sure saw a lot of it last night. I understand you have to play some man to keep the opponent honest. But when you aren’t getting to the quarterback, playing man coverage on superior athletes will be disastrous. And why was there any instance last night where an Army defender was 1-on-1 with Michael Floyd? May as well have handed the Irish 20-plus yards on those plays.

Player of the Game: Notre Dame QB Tommy Rees. Looked good for an 18 year old freshman. Hit the open receivers, did what he needed to do. Moved well in the pocket to avoid the Army pressure.

Final Word: The loss itself doesn’t upset me. Obviously, Notre Dame deserves a lot of credit. I underestimated them. But Army is better than that score. I would not have minded the loss as much if Army had stuck to their guns and done what they are good at. When things get tough, you don’t go to the stuff you don’t practice all the time. Go to what has gotten you this far. Know your identity. Be who you are. If you come up short, at least you got beat at what you do best.

Now, a couple weeks off in preparation for the biggest game of the year, Navy. Army has some work to do before taking on the Midshipmen.

When and Where: 7:30 p.m. at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, N.Y. The game will be shown on NBC.

Series History: 37-8-4 in favor of the Fighting Irish, including a 14-5-3 Notre Dame edge in games played at the old Yankee Stadium.

Matchup: Saturday night we get the matchup of an overlooked, often completely dismissed program that has shown recent improvement after a long period of darkness and an overhyped, overexposed program that has been idling for years. This is the crossroads, the game where Army moves past Notre Dame and continues to move towards its bright future under Rich Ellerson, as the Fighting Irish continue to yearn for days gone by.

Yankee Stadium is the perfect staging point for such an event, the newest version of the big ball yard in the Bronx where these two historic programs used to battle back in their heyday. Back then the names were Rockne and the Four Horsemen – Stuhldreher, Crowley, Miller and Layden – or Earl “Red” Blaik with Doc Blanchard and Glenn Davis. Now we have Brian Kelly with Manti Te’o and Tommy Rees versus Rich Ellerson and Trent Steelman, Jared Hassin, Stephen Anderson and Josh McNary.

I am sure plenty of the Notre Dame faithful, buoyed by the strong performance against Utah, are counting on their Irish to roll over the presumed hapless Black Knights in front of a pro-Notre Dame crowd at Yankee Stadium that will give them a champion’s welcome. These people will be surprised when they see that this is not the Army team from 2006 that went out to South Bend on Notre Dame’s senior day to be the butt of the joke.

This Army team has already faced offense with more weapons than the Irish, such as the Hawaii team that the Black Knights had on the ropes after coming behind from a three-touchdown deficit. For Notre Dame, a freshman quarterback behind a shaky offensive line against a unique defense that boasts one of the top pass rushers in the country? I know who I would put my money on.

Make no mistake; the better team on the Yankee Stadium field Saturday night will be sporting gold helmets. The ones with the black stripe down the middle.

Player(s) to Watch: QB Trent Steelman, FB Jared Hassin. These two will be counted on to carry the Army offense on Saturday. It won’t always be pretty as Notre Dame will have an edge in size along the front line. Honestly, Army played a more athletically gifted defense in Temple and was able to put up 35 points. Expect Notre Dame to try a different approach than the one they took against Navy. Army will have to grind this one out, but that’s what they have been able to do on offense all season.

Potential X-Factor: DE Josh McNary. McNary has been very quiet lately, with no sacks since the overtime loss to Rutgers. On the big stage this weekend, look for him to step up and create some havoc.

Prediction: I think it helps that this game doesn’t have Army’s bowl implications riding on it. There is no added pressure for the team, and they can go into Yankee Stadium loose and hopefully we see them take some chances to make big plays offensively. Army wins.

Army 23, Notre Dame 13

Army football is back.

The Black Knights are eligible for postseason play for the first time since 1996 following a 45-28 win over Kent State. With games still remaining on the schedule against Notre Dame and Navy, Army has a chance to make some national noise before all is said and done.

Becoming bowl eligible does not guarantee Army a spot. Click here for a rundown of the bowl situation.

Army used a balanced attack to rush for 233 yards against the country’s top rushing defense. Army had two players rush for over 60 yards (Jared Hassin, Brian Cobbs) and three more with over 25 yards (Trent Steelman, Patrick Mealy, Raymond Maples). Four players scored rushing touchdowns for the Black Knights: Cobbs (2), Steelman (2), Hassin and Maples. The offensive line played a great game and stepped up against the highly-ranked Golden Flashes defense.

The Army defense forced the Kent State offense into four turnovers, including three interceptions. Richard King had two interceptions, Donovan Travis had the other. Stephen Anderson had seven tackles and forced a fumble that was recovered by Mike Gann.

What Went Right: Offense. Army ran and threw the ball effectively, gaining 382 yards of total offense. Hassin led the way with 75 rushing yards, part of a 233-yard effort by the rushing attack. Steelman was very accurate and hurt Kent State through the air.

What Went Wrong: Defense. The defense was opportunistic, creating four turnovers, but against better teams they will not have that many chances to create those plays. The Black Knights still gave up 410 yards and four scores.

Player of the Game: QB Trent Steelman. Two touchdowns rushing and completed 9 of 10 passing attempts for 149 yards. Steelman and the offense looked sharp.

Final Word: This makes Army a very dangerous team now. There is no pressure this week against Notre Dame. Army will probably be expected to lose although they may be the better team. The team can enjoy the trip to Yankee Stadium and take some chances they probably wouldn’t have if their bowl hopes were riding on the game. Later this week I will preview Army’s upset of Notre Dame.

When and Where: 2 p.m. at Dix Stadium in Kent, Ohio.

Series History: Only one game, a 17-14 Army win in overtime in 2006.

Matchup: Army comes in at 5-4, looking to rebound after the loss to Air Force.

Kent State comes in at 4-5, also looking to bounce back after a loss to Temple.

Last week’s loss makes this a huge game for Army. With only two of these next three games counting for their push towards bowl eligibility, the clock is ticking on Army’s postseason chances. I doubt Rich Ellerson wants the Black Knights to have to play in Yankee Stadium against Notre Dame in front of what will be a pro-Fighting Irish crowd still looking for their sixth win. That game will have enough distractions without the pressure of a do-or-die scenario.

I think the fact that there is a lot riding on this game helps Army. If they had nothing to gain here, it would be easy to overlook Kent State and begin thinking about Notre Dame and Navy. I think the Black Knights will come out hungry on Saturday and put on a good performance, paving the way for an exciting finish to the season.

Player to Watch: FB Jared Hassin. Hassin has now rushed for 100 yards in four straight games. I expect Army to continue to feed him the rock and let him lead them to postseason eligibility. The offensive line has done a great job this season opening up lanes for him and they will have a great chance to step up and show how good they are against the Kent State front seven, which has done a great job against the run.

Potential X-Factor: DL Jarrett Mackey. Mackey has played very well so far, and has been unheralded as much of the attention has gone to Josh McNary. He has played a large role for the Army defense this year and I expect more of the same Saturday.

Prediction: Army won’t suffer from a hangover after the Air Force loss, simply because they cannot afford to. The Black Knights come out strong and dominate from the beginning, cruising to bowl eligibility.

Army 27, Kent State 10

Notes: Army placekicker Alex Carlton was named the CFPA honorable mention Kicker of the Week… Rich Ellerson’s weekly press conference.

The Black Knights honored 29 members of the senior class at Michie Stadium prior to kickoff.

Coming into the game, Army was fifth in the nation in turnover margin. This has been a major factor in the team’s success this season. Sometimes watching the team this year it seemed as if they were walking a tightrope, and needed to be perfect in order to pull the game out. Army cannot get away with mistakes the way other teams can, and we saw an example of that Saturday.

The loss against Air Force provided a good chance for Army to measure were it stands. The game showed just how far they still have to go as a program. Still, the game turned on a few plays, and with a little better luck it could have been a different game.

Army turnovers crushed their chances of winning, with Trent Steelman first interception of the season setting up an Air Force score and a Jared Hassin fumble returned for a touchdown. Army missed its opportunities to create turnovers, with senior linebacker Stephen Anderson dropping an interception. The Black Knights also failed to pick up an Air Force fumble in the first half that they had a good shot at recovering. Finally, down 35-22 and in desperate need of a stop at the goal line, Army forced an Air Force fumble and came out of the pile with the football. It was ruled Air Force’s ball, and the review was inconclusive. Tim Jefferson scored on the next play to make the score 42-22.

What Went Right: Rushing attack. Army was able to rush for 244 yards against the Falcons. Jared Hassin has now rushed for 100 yards in four straight games.

What Went Wrong: Turnovers/Defense. The turnovers really killed Army’s chances, as I detailed above. The defense was put in some tough situations, but that is no excuse to allow the Falcons to run wild. Air Force rushed for 277 yards and threw for 124 more.

Player of the Game: The seniors. What I hope is not lost in this is the improvement that has occurred in this program in such a short period of time. The seniors on this team have talked about bringing winning football back to Army, and they are on the verge of doing so. Many of the seniors stepped up and had big games today.

Final Word: This was the game it would have been nice to have. Still, I favor Army in each of the last three games, beginning next week at Kent State. If Army doesn’t get the win next week, there will be a lot riding on the Notre Dame game at Yankee Stadium. Army needs to take care of business next Saturday.
