1) There are times in golfers careers where the moment seems to stop and you just expect something to happen. That was Tiger Woods. On 16. At the Memorial. From off the green. The pitch shot went in for birdie. The ballgame was essentially over, and Tiger got win #73.

Needless to say he’s the heavy favorite going into the U.S. Open, and if he hits the ball like he did this week at Olympic Club, watch out.

2) Spencer Levin will win eventually. I’m sure he will. He’s got the game to do it. He’s a fidgety, twitchy player, but has a ton of talent and made some clutch par putts this week. That will do him well in the future.

3) Rickie Fowler shot 84 today. 84!!! Just goes to show you how hard this game can be if you’re a little off. One of the best players in the world shot 84. Man, oh man.

Here’s this week’s What It Means:

1) Congrats to Zach Johnson on his victory at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial. He earned it with some great shot making and clutch putting. However, he almost lost it after failing to move his ball-mark back to its correct location on the 18th green. Luckily someone noticed it (and he didn’t sign for an incorrect scorecard), and he made the par putt, ensuring the one-shot victory.

Still, a solid win for a guy who has been knocking on the door numerous times this spring.

2) I’m sure Jason Dufner is dissapointed with second and probably with the triple bogey on #15 most but he’s still got to be happy with his play recently. Two wins and a second is nothing to hang your head about, and he’s playing great going into the U.S. Open.

3) Luke Donald won again today on the European Tour in England and is once again #1 in the world. There he is again, that Luke Donald guy playing well. Just watch out: Olympic Club could be PERFECT for him. This could be his U.S. Open.

1) What a month Jason Dufner is having. Wins New Orleans, gets married, wins again at the Nelson. Damn. Hottest golfer on the planet for sure. The birdie putt on 18 to win the event over Dicky Pride was so pure — right in the heart.

Hey, as Jim Nantz and Nick Faldo said on the end of the CBS broadcast — maybe there is something to this laid back attitude. It’s working for Dufner, and who knows where this road leads to next.

2) Good to see Dicky Pride in contention again. He is THE prototypical journeyman, and one has to hope that his par putt on 18 that nearly forced a playoff leads to good things as time goes on.

3) Phil Mickelson made a Sunday charge before a couple late stumbles coming in. He’s playing better. A major is looming. The one he’s always wanted. The U.S. Open. Watch out!

1) Congrats to Matt Kuchar on winning The Players. What an awesome shot at #14 over the tree and an awesome birdie putt at #16 to give himself enough cushion to win.

The amazingly consistent Kuchar now has the biggest win of his career and an excellent stepping stone for golf’s ultimate prize: a major. I wouldn’t put it past him. He is truly Mr. Consistency.

2) Speaking of consistency that’s what Rickie Fowler has been the last two weeks: 1-T2. Very nice. The more experience he get the better he’ll get in big moments, and for someone that drives it as accurate as he does, watch out at the U.S. Open. He’s longer than people think and could play really well at Olympic Club.

3) Tiger Woods, meanwhile is absolutely all over the place. I feel like I write that almost every week…but I am. I have no idea what’s coming next. None. We’ll see at Memorial but I could see a win or a missed cut. It’s as simple as that.

Here’s this week’s What It Means:

1) Congrats to Rickie Fowler on his first PGA Tour win, defeating Rory McIlroy and D.A. Points in a playoff to win the Wells Fargo Championship. He finally got the monkey off his back and can finally go out and be the star that all the hype and marketing people have made him out to be.

The wedge shot into #18 in the playoff was dynamite, leaving him an easy four-foot putt for the winning birdie. The sky is the limit for Rickie, and I’d look for big things from Fowler over the next 5-10 years.

2) While McIlroy is surely dissapointed to have lost the playoff, he does have the consolation prize of becoming #1 in the world again.

Furthermore he’s continuing his good play, which should bode well for him headed into this week’s Players.

3) Meanwhile Tiger Woods’ game is all over the place. All facets of the game are off and he seems at times disinterested and has no gusto in his walk.

That will need to be fixed immediately if he wants to both contend this week at Sawgrass and be in good shape for the U.S. Open in June.

Here’s this week’s What It Means:

1) Congrats to Jason Dufner, winning his first PGA Tour event, the Zurich Classic of New Orleans today on the second playoff hole. They say it’s better to be lucky than good and that’s Dufner, getting lip ins on 13, 15 and 17 for par and then birdieing the second playoff hole, #18, to beat Ernie Els in the playoff.

Dufner is very hard to read, doesn’t really crack a smile and at times looks very shaky. I’m not sure where he goes from here, but getting your first win is a good starting point.

2) Meanwhile you have to feel for Ernie Els. He had two great chances to win on 18, both on the first playoff hole and regulation, and couldn’t make the putts — the story of the last two years, really for Els. But you can’t totally fault the putter, as it saved him many times today as he was just a little off in the ball striking.

I hope he wins again and he wins soon, because I’m worried that all these crushing defeats could hurt Els chances to contend and win another major, which is what all of us desperately want to see.

3) Luke Donald, by finishing third, is number one in the world again, as we yo-yo back and forth between him and Rory McIlroy at the top, all because of the way the rankings work. It’s stupid, but it’s happening, and we have to live with it this way.

Here’s this week’s What It Means:

1) Congrats to Ben Curtis on winning the 2012 Valero Texas Open for his first win since the 2006 84 Lumber Classic, an event which no longer exists.

That par putt on 17 was dynamite and one of the more unlikely major champions in the history of golf is now back in the winner’s circle.

I have absolutely no idea where Curtis goes from here. Maybe a win or two here and there but right now he seems a little too inconsistent to get into the winner’s circle again. Parity reigns right now on the PGA Tour, and I’m not sure he has the game to rise above that.

2) I do know where John Huh is going: up. Big time. The Mayakoba winner earlier this year opened the Valero with a 44 on his opening nine, and finished 2nd. That says something. And he arguably should have won this tournament outright if a couple putts had just gone his way.

He’ll win again this year and will content for at least one major. Just watch.

3) Matt Every. Hmm. We’ve talked before about his off the course issues but he’s got on the course issues now. He put himself right there with a great chance to win this week but seemed like he was going at 60348392mph come the weekend. His routine is too quick, his swing is too quick and his putting stroke was too inconsistent down the stretch. None of that will win you an event. Back to the drawing board for Every.

Here’s this week’s What It Means:

1) Good job by Carl Petterson on winning this week’s RBC Heritage. Consistent play with timely putts helped lead to his five shot win. Petterson now has five career wins, even though it seems like he has about two. In fact, he might be able to battle Mark Wilson for the claim of most underrated man on the PGA Tour.

So what’s the rub? He hasn’t really won anything of much importance besides the Memorial, and hasn’t followed up his wins with any big wins. Winning WGC’s and ultimately a major will be what it takes to put Carl Petterson on the map.

2) Colt Knost is an up-and-coming guy. Watch out for him. The former U.S. Amateur champion finished third this week and once he finds his footing out on the PGA Tour he will be someone to watch as time goes on. He’s got the game to win out on the PGA Tour.

3) Kudos to Louis Oosthuizen, who flew 30 hours from Augusta to Malaysia and won the European Tour event there today. Good job by him and for getting over his jetlag. We all saw how well he was playing last week, so I’m not at all surprised to see him win this week.

1) What an amazing Sunday at Augusta. Bubba Watson, a throwback player to another era, who in 2010 at the PGA Championship just wanted to make the Ryder Cup team so his father could see him represent his country before he passed, hits one of the most amazing shots in Masters history to win his first green jacket. As Jim said, these are scripts you just can’t write.

The shot on #10 in the playoff is one of the best shots in golf history and will be replayed for years and years to come.

The man who plays shots no one else even attempts is now a major winner and if he can keep his emotions in check in the clutch — who knows, he might win a bunch of majors.

2) Similarly, Louis Oosthuizen’s double eagle on #2 will also be replayed for years to come. Look, in some ways he ran into a buzz saw that was Watson and his wild shot making down the stretch.

For him, the second shot on the second playoff hole is what will rue him, but overall this is a really nice bounce back after a pretty serious ankle injury last year.

3) Tiger Woods’ week was plain and simply awful. For some reason, it just didn’t translate from Bay Hill to Augusta. We’ll see what happens when we next see him at Quail Hollow.

Here’s this week’s What It Means:

1) Tiger Woods won the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill. Tiger Woods won a PGA Tour event for the first time since 2009. Tiger Woods got a legitimate win.

The Masters is in two weeks. I can’t wait.

Tiger has every facet of his game working right now — from his long game and especially his tee shots (#1 in total driving again) to his short game and putter, where he’s beginning to sink key putts again (see the par putt today on #15).

If he keeps up this lethal combination, watch out.

2) Graeme McDowell finished second this week, and for someone that shot somewhere around 80 at this event last year, this has to be considered a major improvement. After such a sensational 2010, 2011 was a major disappointment and this second place finish puts him right in position for a run at another major in two weeks at The Masters.

3) Ernie Els failed to get the finish he needed to get into the top 50 in the world ranking and get into The Masters. He’ll either need to win the Shell Houston Open this week or get a special invitation from Augusta to make the field.

He can blame his short putting once again for this one, as he missed too many short putts to be successful for a strong finish.
