He has played over 1,000 games for your franchise, all nine solid years of his career belong to your team, the fans love him, his teammates seem to love him, and the kid can flat-out rake. If you’re Sandy Alderson why haven’t you made a contract offer to David Wright yet? Up until last week he was hitting over .400, yes it’s only May, but even where he stands now hitting .365 is still worth mentioning.  He is already half way to his total RBI count of the previous year, and since moving the fences in at Citi Field he has hit three homers. He hit five home runs at Citi Field all of last year. Yes he battled injuries last year, but he is still bothered by a fractured pinky on his throwing hand this year.

This isn’t an All-Star ballot though, the only point being made here is that David Wright looks like he’s getting back on track. 2011 was a hiccup in his career and it seems as though he has gotten a boost of confidence from the fences being moved in this year. The departure of Jose Reyes might also may have had an effect on his confidence. He no longer has to share the spotlight with the former co-face of the franchise, instead Wright has stepped up to that role and is leading by example.

This week Sandy Alderson said he was going to speak to David Wright’s agents about a new contract, but made it known it doesn’t mean a contract offer will come out of it or not. He also has made it known through his career that he doesn’t favor long term contracts. There is no logical reason to come out and say this during Wright’s 2-22 slump. No reason to kick him when he’s down. Wright wears his heart on his sleeve and all the elements this season indicate that if he’s confident and healthy, he can hit. Pick up the guy’s contract extension for next year and then say all of this. Sandy Alderson needs to make a statement and tell Wright, “hey we like the way you’re playing ball so we definitely want you on the team next year, and keep this up and there could be a new contract in the future. Give the guy something to play for while giving him the confidence to go out there and be a leader of the New York Mets.
