There are a few positives that I noted after viewing the game.

From what I’ve read and been seeing there is plenty of depth on the line for the Indianapolis Colts.

Obviously Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis are back to back Pro Bowl selections and will be starters on the end. Jerry Hughes is also looking very good as a pass rush option. With Mathis’ contract coming to an end, and Freeney getting older, it is reassuring to know that Hughes can be a viable option in the future.

At Defensive Tackle there are plenty of options. However none are very proven.

My plan was to make my 100th post displaying my top 10 articles ever written, however I wrote my 99th on Jamaal Anderson, 100th on Ernie Sims, and 101st on Tommie Harris. All the free agents came in at once and it cause me to breeze past it.

Anyway, now that I have written 100 posts, here are my top 10 all time, decided on by the number of page views, which of course comes from faithful and dedicated readers.

10. Running Backs: Brown
This post was written as a part of the series looking at all the running backs on the Colts roster, this was during the lockout.

Tommie Harris has signed a one year deal with the Indianapolis Colts. Harris a perfect fit coming over from Chicago’s Tampa Two style defense was once widely considered to be one of the league’s top interior lineman. Harris has been plagued by injuries over the past couple of seasons. This is a perfect opportunity for a “Booger MacFarland” type of player to come in and make an immediate impact, but he’s also not costing Indy much in terms of money.

Harris will be a perfect plug and play player. I believe he has the ability, if he does what he did in Chicago a couple of years ago, to be a major impact in Indianapolis this season.

Harris fits our defense perfectly, and could make an immediate impact in the trenches. I honestly hope Harris can resurrect his career in Indy and help a team that desperately needs run help get to the Super Bowl!

I’m so excited right now. Harris was THE one free agent I was hoping the Colts would go after.

Well done Mr. Irsay and Mr. Polian!

Sims was originally drafted 9th overall by the Detroit Lions in 2006. Last season Sims spent the year in Philadelphia. In 5 seasons Sims has recorded 329 total tackles, with his best overall season being 2007, his second season with Detroit, where he recorded 97 tackles. Sims recorded 48 tackles last season with Philadelphia and played a pretty prominent part on a pretty decent defense.

Without a doubt Gary Brackett is the starter at MLB. However there will be a linebacker competition for the outside positions. I view Pat Angerer as a more than viable option as a lineback until his contract runs out in Indianapolis. Last season we had Philip Wheeler and rookie Kavell Conner. I would imagine that at this point the Colts view their LB corps as Brackett, Angerer, and Conner.

However I could see Sims pushing Conner as the starting outside linebacker. Sims has underachieved since being in the NFL but has the physical tools to be a top flight linebacker, and a solid defensive starter for our team. It all depends how he performs and how he grasps the new system.

Anderson, the 8th overall pick by the Falcons in 2007 has registered 4.5 sacks in 4 seasons. I’m not sure where Anderson fits with the Colts. He is a freakish athlete at 6’6″ and 290 lbs, but his position in which he was drafted was defensive end. I’m not even sure if Anderson would make the DE rotation with Freeney, Mathis, and ever Jerry Hughes. He could come out at a bigger DE on rushing downs to replace the smaller Robert Mathis.

Anderson could make his way as a specialty player at DT on passing downs. He is a big body, and could put some pressure on the quarterback from the middle positions.

There is no question that Anderson will not be a starter on the Colts defensive line, even with the under achieving tackle positions. Anderson could become the future Raheem Brock, a situational defensive lineman, but not a starter.

I like the signing, but again, I’m not sure how much of an impact he will make on the Colts this season.

What if for some crazy reason the franchise tag is not valid? What if Peyton decides to take his talents somewhere else? Does that not just make you shudder as a Colts fan? Me too!

Lets try to set up a scenario where the parallels are so closely related, that we as Colts fans can relate with the fans of Cleveland. This might be tough to do because Manning is not a diva, Manning is not going to leave Indianapolis, and Manning is not going to team up with Wes Welker, or Antonio Gates, or Adrian Peterson. Just turn on your imagination to do this.

Lets imagine that in the playoff loss to the Jets, with the last 10 minutes of the game, Manning doesn’t try very hard. Let’s just imagine that he…

A favorite writer of mine on Twitter just posted this:

“I’m not actually angry, just bitterly amused. Manning can never succeed with the media. Failures more pronounced than success. If this season elevated Brady over Manning, then Rodgers should have been number one.

He nails it. When ever the Patriots lose, the Patriots lost. When ever the Colts lose, Manning choked.

I’m going to try to format this piece in a way that is somewhat conversational in nature, in that I will make a point, and make a rebuttal to what I think people on the Brady side of the fence would argue with. Therefore to make this easier, Manning will be in BOLD, and Brady in italics.
