Scoring started in the second inning when Mets catcher, Mike Nickeas singled, scoring Daniel Murphy. Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen, who went 2-4, tied the game up with his sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to score Josh Harrison. At the beginning of the eighth inning, reliever Jaun Cruz entered the game and lasted less than one inning, giving up two hits and one earned run. The Mets would eventually score two runs in the eighth inning from a Lucas Luda single that scored Mike Baxter, and a Daniel Murphy fielders choice that scored Kirk Nieuwenhuis. The Pirates made one last push in the bottom of the eighth inning, but managed to score only one run back. Andrew McCutchen’s single scored his second RBI of the night, but his team fell short of a win.

The game was a pitchers dual through the first seven innings, with each starter allowing only one run.

Mets starting pitcher R.A. Dickey got the win (6-1), going seven innings, allowing five hits, one earned run, and striking out eleven. Frank Francisco picked up his eleventh save of the season, giving up zero runs, and striking out one. Kirk Nieuwenhuis #9 and Ronny Cedeno #13 of the New York Mets celebrates after winning against the Pittsburgh Pirates during the game on May 22, 2012 at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
