In the cellar…
Posted on 25 Apr 2009 by Josh Lile.
Now I realize the season is still young, but the Astros are sitting in the cellar of the NL Central. Yes, behind the Pirates. Most remarkable though is that they have the 2nd most losses in the major leagues, tied with Cleveland at 11, behind the Nationals. Why, you may ask, are the Astros in the cellar? I'll give you two numbers: .320, .387. These respectively are the Astros team OBP an...

Sunday Astros Quick Hits
Posted on 20 Apr 2009 by Josh Lile.
We sit here on April 18th, and the Astros are 4-8. Not exactly the start I anticipated, but what can you do? The fact that the team has won 4 games while getting nothing out of Lance Berkman is remarkable enough. So here are a few Astros quick hits for you on an exhausted Sunday evening. *Speaking of Berkman, he's hitting a sparkling .189 on the year with a couple of homers and no stol...

Keppinger shoots and Pudge scores
Posted on 8 Apr 2009 by Josh Lile.
I think Jeff Keppinger may have earned himself some playing time. It took 24 hours for the Astros to find themselves in an extra inning contest in 2009. Ryan Dempster and Wandy Rodriguez both pitched wellm but neither pitcher was able to figure in a decision. One pitcher who did was Neal Cotts. Cotts is a serviceable pitcher no doubt, but when its game 2 of the season shouldn't you have ...

What 2009 Holds, pt 2

When we last met the Astros pitching was solid. Not great, but solid. Everything is fine right? Well…. The Lineup The Astros are lucky they are in the NL Central. In the American League this lineup is laughed at. In the NL East the Mets and Phillies point fingers and laugh. In the NL Central though this lineup gives the Astros a legit shot. If Carlos Lee and Lance Berkman are healthy the ...

Astros pick up Jeff Keppinger
Posted on 31 Mar 2009 by Josh Lile.
Just a quick note for today. The second half of the Astros preview will be out in a few days, but they did pick up Jeff Keppinger today. In 2007 he had a 123 ops+, but dropped off dramatically in 2008. He should be a pretty solid upgrade at 3B for 2009. More later

What 2009 holds, Pt. 1
Posted on 23 Mar 2009 by Josh Lile.
It is pretty clear that the Astros overachieved in 2008. The 'Stros had a major second half push that upped their record to 86-75. They had a pythagorean record of 77-84. Houston might need a minor miracle to approach 86 wins in 2009. It might help to actually look at the actual differences in the roster for 2009 though. The Bullpen The main reason for a team overachieving signific...
