Morrow shines in Vizquel’s swan song
Posted on 4 Oct 2012 by Amanda Tallon.
Brandon Morrow definitely saved his best for last, having his best start since returning from the disabled list, on the last day of the season. Striking out five of the first six batters he faced, it was easy to tell early on that Morrow had his best stuff working on the night. His eight innings, three hits, three walks, and one earned run with eleven strikeouts is one of the best pitching line...

Jays beat Twins in 10
Posted on 2 Oct 2012 by Amanda Tallon.
At this point in the season, there’s not much left to play for if you’re the Blue Jays. The team could be forgiven for solely counting down until season’s send, but apparently that’s not what Toronto has in mind. After kicking off the scoring in the first on Adam Lind’s single to score Rajai Davis, the Jays were unable to keep the Minnesota Twins on the scoreboard. Aaron Laffey lacked...

Jays lose doubleheader to Yanks
Posted on 20 Sep 2012 by Amanda Tallon.
On a day where both Jays’ starters pitched well, the offence just couldn’t come up with enough support to get a win. Henderson Alvarez had one of his better starts of the season. He lasted seven innings, struck out seven, walked none, and gave up five hits. The three runs he allowed in the game all came in the first inning, but he managed to shut it down after that. It was a nice progressio...

Toronto avoids sweep; win 6-4
Posted on 6 Sep 2012 by Amanda Tallon.
Wednesday night’s win was a sorely needed bright spot to end the Blue Jays’ current home stand. After winning the first two games against Tampa Bay last week with good pitching and defense, Toronto went on to drop their last four games, including two shutouts at the hands of the Baltimore Orioles. In his third start since coming off the DL, Brandon Morrow continued to improve and show glimp...

Romero shines in Jays’ loss
Posted on 29 Aug 2012 by Amanda Tallon.
Tuesday was a bit of a mixed bag for the Blue Jays. Before game two against the Yankees even started, it was announced that Jose Bautista would be having season-ending surgery to bring more stability to his injured left wrist. The minor league system also took a hit when first-round draft pick Marcus Stroman was suspended 50 games for failing a drug test after ingesting a banned substance, alth...

Spring Training – What We’ve Learned So Far
Posted on 12 Mar 2012 by Ben Fisher.
Spring training is really a no-lose proposition. If you win the games, then great. If you lose, well, the games don't matter anyway. Even for pitchers, you either pitch well in short stints, or you don't pitch well because, clearly, you didn't get a chance to find any kind of groove. Still, amidst the usual haul of “Team X looks good” and “Player Y appears ready to break throu...

Bats Come Alive vs. Orioles
Posted on 2 Sep 2011 by Ben Fisher.
What Happened The Blue Jays (69-68) shook off another bullpen combustion (this time by the re-debuting Brian Tallet) on Tuesday and settled back in to continue their mastery of the Orioles. Brett Lawrie continued to rake, while Henderson Alvarez earned his first career win in style and Yunel Escobar caught fire as the Jays took two of three. A Closer Look Bautista is Well Protected: I offered a...

Jays Ship Hill, McDonald Off to Arizona
Posted on 24 Aug 2011 by Ben Fisher.
It’s too bad that Aaron Hill’s tenure as Blue Jays had to come to this – a “chance of scenery” trade that saw Toronto bring in likely nothing of long-term value so that Hill could have an opportunity at postseason success and to hit the refresh button on a stalled career. On Tuesday, the Jays sent fan favourites Hill and John McDonald to Arizona in exchange for Kelly Johnson, who is e...

Wells Gets Triumphant Return, Jays Win Series
Posted on 15 Aug 2011 by Ben Fisher.
What Happened Vernon Wells had his moment in his first return to Rogers Centre, but the Blue Jays (61-59) made sure that moment didn’t last all weekend long. After Wells homered on the first pitch he saw in his Angels’ win on Friday night, Toronto rallied to win both weekend games and claim the series. A Closer Look Up (Edwin Encarnacion): Get a game-winning, series-clinching walk-off hit a...

Pitching Leads the Way vs. Cincy
Posted on 20 Jun 2011 by Ben Fisher.
What Happened For at least one weekend, questions about the Blue Jays’ (36-36) pitching staff were put to rest thanks to a trio of exceptional starts. Jo-Jo Reyes, Brandon Morrow and Carlos Villanueva all enjoyed terrific outings, with only Villanueva failing to pick up a win due to a power outage from the Jays’ bats. A Closer Look Encouraging Starts Abound: So what to make of the performan...

The Series Rewind: Jays fizzle after impressive opener
Posted on 23 Aug 2010 by Ben Fisher.
The Breakdown: How is it, again, that the Red Sox still seem to have the Blue Jays’ (64-59) number? That certainly didn’t seem to be the case after Friday’s dominant 16-2 win by Toronto. But the rest of the weekend didn’t quite go as smoothly, with Boston earning a 5-4 walk-off win on Saturday and a 5-0 shutout behind a stellar outing by Clay Buchholz on Sunday. The Jays may have won th...

Jays, Braves Make Shortstop Swap
Posted on 14 Jul 2010 by Ben Fisher.
Those who are wondering whether the Jays will be buyers or sellers come trade deadline time don’t have a much clearer picture after Alex Anthopoulos’ first significant mid-season deal. Anthopoulos sent Alex Gonzalez and a pair of minor leaguers, SS Tyler Pastornicky and P Tim Collins, to Atlanta in exchange for Yunel Escobar and left-handed reliever Jo-Jo Reyes. The trade essentially boils ...
