Heading into the last month of the regular season, it's time to take a serious look at the National League's potential playoff teams and see who are the serious contenders to win 2012′s coveted Commissioner's Trophy. Going by division then the two Wild Card openings, I'll list my picks to reach the playoffs and their chances of winning it all. National League East, Washington Nationals: S...

Playoff Push Belies MLB Grind
Posted on 29 Jul 2012 by Steven Keys.
The ‘dog days’ of summer have arrived. The genesis of that phrase? I haven’t a clue. To tell ya’ the truth, sometimes I just don’t want to know the answer. Call it Information Age burn-out. Suffice to say, ‘dog days’ feels apropos come late July. It’s that time in baseball when the pep & vigor of spring has vanished like a cool summer breeze. Players, managers and umpires st...

Fresh Prince in Cincy
Posted on 10 Jun 2012 by Jeremy Klumpp.
The Tigers overcame a poor performance by Justin Verlander's standards to defeat the Cincinnati Reds 3-2 on Saturday afternoon. An eighth inning single by Prince Fielder off of Sean Marshall (1-2) scoring Brennan Boesch proved to be the game-winner. Verlander lasted six innings, but threw 127 pitches giving up six hits, three walks and two runs. Verlander did strike-out nine Reds batters, and ...

The Suicide Reds
Posted on 9 Jun 2012 by Jeremy Klumpp.
The Cincinnati Reds beat the Tigers 6-5 with a ball that traveled about 60 feet Friday night at the Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati. Miguel Cairo led off the bottom of the tenth inning with a triple mishandled by Matt Young in right field, and two batters later Wilson Valdez laid down a perfect bunt scoring Cairo, and earning the Reds the victory. The Tigers fell behind early with anoth...

Pittsburgh Pirates Struggle Against Divisional Opponents
Posted on 7 May 2012 by Drew Karpen.
Up until this week, the Pittsburgh Pirates were the only team in the majors to not score more than five runs in a game. That streak ended on Monday, April 30, in Pittsburgh’s series finale against the Atlanta Braves. The offense exploded for nine runs on their way to splitting the four game series, with a 9-3 victory. Pittsburgh, hoping their outburst would carry over to St. Louis, was ge...

Revisiting the Cahill Trade and the Gio Market is About to Heat Up
Posted on 16 Dec 2011 by Josh Muller.
Last week, seemingly out of nowhere, the Oakland A’s traded all-star pitcher Trevor Cahill to the Diamondbacks for prospects. My initial reaction was that it was fair for both sides and I maintain that stance. I am confused about the timing, though. The talk of the town has been about Gio Gonzalez and Andrew Bailey (which I’ll get to later) and then Billy Beane does the unexpected and trade...

The “Underdog” Bills Face Another Giant Test
Posted on 13 Oct 2011 by Norm Duhamel.
These underdog Buffalo Bills seeem like they won't get any respect until they get to the playoffs. Even then, will they? But it seems that's just how they prefer it. “For us we’re the underdog every week in our minds because nobody wanted us or thought we could do anything this year,” said Ryan Fitzpatrick. The Bills will be looking to get their 5th win of the year before going into thei...

Hats Off Cincinnati
Posted on 19 Aug 2011 by Derrick Blyberg.
The Cincinnati Reds head into Pittsburgh for a weekend series after dropping two-out-of-three to the Washington Nationals in typical 2011 Reds fashion. The consistent failure to produce timely hitting has been a thorn the size of a California Redwood stuck in the club’s side. “That's been the story of the year,” Reds manager Dusty Baker said. “Get one guy hot one day. Get ano...

Look Over Yonder!
Posted on 9 Aug 2011 by Derrick Blyberg.
After watching the Cincinnati Reds play in person at Wrigley over the weekend, I finally became convinced that the door to the 2011 playoffs for the Reds has been slammed, sealed shut and possibly boarded up until Spring Training of 2012. Part of this realization came from Yonder Alonso’s one-man circus in left field and the continuing inconsistency of hitters to come through with runners i...

Beer, Big Macs & Brew Separation
Posted on 6 Aug 2011 by Steven Keys.
Separation. It’s the word on every manager’s mind come August. Get ten games over .500, win 3 outta’ 4 series and start building a lead. Reach your benchmarks and the competition won’t even matter. You’ll get separation. First year Brewers’ Manager Ron Roenicke is getting some divisional disconnect this week after going head-to-head with the only other contender in the NL Central, t...

Rockies End Roadtrip in Disappointing Fashion – Face Difficult July Schedule
Posted on 28 Jun 2011 by Steve Folsom.
Colorado’s roadtrip began in Cleveland where they took two out of three from the Indians. The Rockies then made their first trip to the New Yankee Stadium and won the first of three. The roadtrip would end with a three-game slide as the Rockies would lose the last two to the Yankees and then lose a make-up game to the Chicago Cubs on Monday afternoon. There were some positives to take awa...
