That aroma you smell is the Angels stinking
Posted on 12 Aug 2012 by Bill Mahoney.
I've tried to stay calm. I've tried to stay rational. I HAVE TRIED! I HAVE HAD ENOUGH!!! Losing 2 of 3 to the Seattle Mariners is embarrassing! The M's are in serious re-building mode, and reside at the bottom on the American League in most offensive categories, including 2 of the important ones, runs and RBI's. For those of who don't think the pressure is starting to build in Anaheim, check o...

Extra, extra….Angels drop a pair in San Diego
Posted on 20 May 2012 by Bill Mahoney.
What a break for the Angels. They started interleague play with 3 games against the worst team, record wise at least, in the National League in the San Diego Padres. The Padres left the 3 games with the 2nd worst record in the NL. What helps is taking 2 of 3 from the awful Angels. I know, this Halo team, full of veterans, will get their act together. Unfortunately, it wasn't this weekend. When...

Angels slip Hatcher a Mickey in the form of a pink slip
Posted on 16 May 2012 by Bill Mahoney.
Mickey Hatcher is out as Angels coach. Jim Eppard is in. If there is any more questions as to who is running the team, I think it can be answered now. Jerry DiPoto thinks the Angels offense has been underachieving, so he pulled the plug on one of Mike Scioscia's closest buddies. It probably way past due for the long-time batting instructor, who as recently as 3 years ago saw his charges hit ....

While the Angels are seeing red, Abreu searches for bluer skies
Posted on 5 May 2012 by Bill Mahoney.
So let me get this right, Bobby Abreu was upset at his lack of playing time with the Angels? Tired of hearing his complaints, the Angels finally let the guy go. So what does Abreu do? He signs with the Dodgers as a backup outfielder. Did they add a DH in the National League? And where will Abreu play, exactly. Can't see him replacing Ethier or Kemp, so that eliminates right and center. I gue...

Offense is fine, but the Angels need to bulldoze the bullpen
Posted on 12 Apr 2012 by Bill Mahoney.
Go out and buy a new car. Make sure to get all the inside trimmings. Money is no problem as you customize your new ride so it looks like the best thing on wheels. One final thing: Make sure you put the bald tires from your beat up old jalopy on it. That is the state of the Angels roster. The team scored 14 runs in two days against a rebuilding Minnesota Twins team, only to watch their bullpen c...

Angels re-sign Kendrick, but what about the futures of Aybar, Trumbo and Morales
Posted on 8 Jan 2012 by Bill Mahoney.
Evidently the Angels have found a pot of gold. They just keep doling out money, this time taking care of a guy that is already on the roster. Saturday, the Angels signed Howie Kendrick to an 4-year contract extension. The deal is reported to be worth 33.5 million, a contract very similar to the one Rickie Weeks of the Brewers signed last spring. Kendrick still has to pass his physical, so the d...

Angels can’t sign another free agent………..Cantu
Posted on 6 Jan 2012 by Bill Mahoney.
I know it doesn't compare to the Albert Pujols, C.J. Wilson, and maybe not even the LaTroy Hawkins deal, but Jorge Cantu is one of the signings that may turn out to be a blessing in disguise. The Halos inked Cantu to a minor league deal on Friday. Cantu, who had a disappointing season last year in San Diego, is just 2 seasons removed from driving on 100 runs with the Marlins. In a weird coincid...

Angels swoop in again, sign Hawk-ins
Posted on 8 Dec 2011 by Bill Mahoney.
While waiting for CJ Wilson to make his decision, the Angels filled another hole on their roster by signing reliever LaTroy Hawkins to a 1-year deal. Hawkins signed for 3 million, not bad for a middle innings, and sometimes late innings guy. The 38 year old Hawkins should do what Fernando Rodney couldn't do, and that's mentor Jordan Walden, and some of the other young Halo hurlers. Another thi...

Call it what you want, but Jeff Mathis is now a Blue Jay
Posted on 3 Dec 2011 by Bill Mahoney.
The Angels made a huge move this morning, acquiring Houston Astros manager Brad Mills. No, not really, but they did pick up Brad Mills from the Blue Jays. What did it take to get the lefty with a lifetime ERA of 8.57? It only took a guy with a lifetime batting average of .194. Yes, Angels fans, Jeff Mathis is now a Toronto Blue Jay. Mathis career in an Angels uniform is now over. I will be the...

After catching flak, Angels stopped chatting and finally did some dealing
Posted on 30 Nov 2011 by Bill Mahoney.
Yes, I haven't written much on the Halos lately. Not because I don't care, far from it, it's just that they had done nothing. That's not entirely true, as they did hire Matt Klentak as their assistant GM. The 31 year old whiz kid was pretty much the only news the Halos made of late. That all changed Wednesday afternoon, when the Angels sent pitcher Tyler Chatwood to the Colorado Rockies for cat...

Angels finish 2nd twice, but look to add a number one
Posted on 15 Nov 2011 by Bill Mahoney.
I can hear the chant now, “We're number two, we're number two”. MLB is handing out it's awards, and a couple of Angels took second in the Rookie of the Year, and the Cy Young honors. Mark Trumbo finished behind the Rays Jeremy Hellickson, and just ahead of Kansas City's Eric Hosmer in the R.O.Y. voting. Meanwhile, Jered Weaver finished a distant second to Justin Verlander in the Cy...

Jerry’s no dummy, but will he be the one pulling the strings?
Posted on 30 Oct 2011 by Bill Mahoney.
I remember Jerry DiPoto, the pitcher. Nothing special, more of a journeyman. Now I'll care about what he does on a daily basis since he is the new Angels General Manager. His new job will be tougher than any situation he ever faced as a player. He comes with a great resume in scouting. We all know about the players he took from the Angels in the Dan Haren deal, let's just hope he can do that s...
