The Brooms in the stands were in fact used last night. The San Francisco Giants (19-12) managed to complete a three game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers (13-17) with a 4-3 win on Cinco de Mayo. The Giants sweep at AT&T marks their 6th win in a row. The Dodgers, meanwhile, have lost 4 in a row as they head back to LA to take on the visiting Diamondbacks. The Giants were out to a 4-run lead ...

Sergio Romo came into the game in relie...

One Giant Leap for San Fran-kind
Posted on 29 Oct 2012 by Steven Keys.
California and baseball, they were made for each other. They go together like hot dogs & mustard, guacamole & chips, politics & debate. Kismet. Long before Walter O’Malley (Dodgers) and Horace Stoneham (Giants) moved their New York business interests cross-country to the Golden State (‘58), the game of baseball was already well-situated on the Pacific Coast, producing such gems ...

Playoff Push Belies MLB Grind

The ‘dog days’ of summer have arrived. The genesis of that phrase? I haven’t a clue. To tell ya’ the truth, sometimes I just don’t want to know the answer. Call it Information Age burn-out. Suffice to say, ‘dog days’ feels apropos come late July. It’s that time in baseball when the pep & vigor of spring has vanished like a cool summer breeze. Players, managers and umpires st...

Rockies Wish May Would Go Away
Posted on 27 May 2012 by Steve Folsom.
Rockies wish they would fall asleep on April 30th and wake up on June 1st after two awful May campaigns in a row. If I were the Rockies, I would find some way to get baseball to take a 31 day break from April 30th to June 1st. This is the 2nd consecutive season in which their May has been awful. Nothing is going right and the Rockies are sliding into a hole they might not be able to get out o...

“Hope and Change” the “Nationals” Way
Posted on 9 Sep 2011 by Marien Hornyak.
This has been an up-and-down week for the Washington Nationals. Tough losses, games played in lousy weather (with rainouts and rain delays), the debut of several young players and the return of pitcher Stephen Strasburg. The Nationals started the week with a heartbreaking 6-3 loss to the New York Mets. What made it difficult was that the loss went to starting pitcher Liván Hernandez, who ma...

Sunday: Day of Unrest
Posted on 16 Aug 2011 by Steve Folsom.
Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN featured the St. Louis Cardinals hosting the Colorado Rockies. It was a great chance for Colorado to play well in front of a national audience; an audience who may not understand the team’s record in relation to their roster. Furthermore, the Rockies had an opportunity to win on Sunday for the first time in 17 attempts. The game got off to a great start when ...

Phight for Right to Party

In case anyone’s last name is “Van Winkle” or they have been residing in a town called “Bedrock” it has now become common knowledge that the 2011 Philadelphia Phillies (77-40, 37 games over .500 for the first time since finishing 101-61 in 1977) are officially the best team in baseball. Mind you, these numbers reflect regular season opponents in August rather than postseason opponents...

It seems like just yesterday I was typing up my preseason predictions for the upcoming baseball season. It's hard to believe that we are already at the halfway point. Who says that the baseball season is too long? As per usual with baseball, this season is full of unpredictability and surprises. We've seen two no-hitters within one week to make this the year of the pitcher 2.0, a home ...
