Analyzing Montreal’s 3 Training Camp Battles
Posted on 30 Sep 2011 by Corey Krakower.
Let’s call a spade a spade, the Montreal Canadiens have not looked very good in the preseason…but that’s a subject for another day. I’m here to focus on the positive – and that is to look at the 3 battles going on in training camp for roster spots. Up front, the Habs will look to roll out 3 “skilled” lines and 1 “grinding” line. Their first line on opening night will be Ca...

A Quiet Day for the Senators
Posted on 1 Jul 2011 by Mika Oehling.
The day isn't over yet, but there's been a lot of activity on the NHL Free Agent Frenzy day, as some squads snap up talent for next season, while others, have remained relatively quiet. It was expected to be a quiet day in Ottawa and that it most certainly was, as the Royal visit of Will and Kate grabbed all the attention. Murray warned that he wasn't going to make the same mistake as he had in...

Habs sign Erik Cole and Peter Budaj
Posted on 1 Jul 2011 by Corey Krakower.
The Montreal Canadiens have acquired 2 players today via the Unrestricted Free Agent Market. First; the team agreed to terms with 28 year old backup goaltender Peter Budaj to a 2 year deal worth $1.15M per season. The Habs wanted a goalie who was a bit younger than Auld so that they could sign him to a 2 year deal. Budaj is a former #1 goaltender and has spent his career with the Colorado Avala...

Dirty Bird Blog: The Fog Has Lifted

“Relax, chill out. We've got lots of time. We're not winning the Stanley Cup in the first exhibition game. It's just the way it panned out. That's why we have these games, to work things out. Not only myself, but the team. And not just our team, every team.” – Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price after losing 4-2 in his first pre-season game of the 2010-11 season. With ap...

Montreal Canadiens 2011 Summer Playbook
Posted on 20 Jun 2011 by Corey Krakower.
After a reasonably successful 2010/2011 NHL season, the Montreal Canadiens enter the offseason with most of their core players already under contract and quite a bit of cap space from expiring contracts. Despite a good season, the team can’t look at that and proceed as if they have no improvements to make. Especially in the Eastern conference, there are a number of young teams that are only g...

30 NHL Prospects Ready for Prime Time
Posted on 15 Jun 2011 by Corey Krakower.
Cap space has become one of the best assets a team can have in the NHL’s Salary Cap Era. One of the easiest ways for a GM to give himself cap flexibility is to use roster spots on rookies that carry entry level deals, and that’s precisely what teams are doing. NHL rosters were loaded with rookies during the 2010-11 season, and the trend is expected to continue in 2011-12. As fans start to p...

ALMOST! A Poem Summarizing the 2010-11 Montreal Canadiens
Posted on 28 Apr 2011 by Corey Krakower.
So just like that, the 2010-11 Montreal Canadiens season has come to an end. I was incredibly disappointed with how the game ended last night, but when looking at the big picture, you have to be satisfied with how the Habs pushed the Boston Bruins to a game 7 overtime. Its frustrating that 3 of the 4 Bruins wins were in overtime – one extra bounce going Montreal’s way in one of those 3 game...

A Shot at Redemption

Sometimes a game is about something more. Sometimes we don’t know what to say or think about a game. All we can to is just let it unfold before us and take it all in. And tonight for the Boston Bruins, as they took on the Montreal Canadiens in Game 7 of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal, this was one of those games that was about more than statistics, more than match-ups and more than any...

BOSTON B-RUINED: Habs Beat Bruins in Game 7; Move on to Face Washington
Posted on 27 Apr 2011 by Corey Krakower.
If there is one thing this Boston-Montreal playoff series has taught us, it’s to not even bother making predictions. First the Habs go into Boston and take 2 games. Unbelievable. Then when it looks like the Bruins may get swept, they take the next 2 in Montreal. Unreal. Then when it seems that neither team can win at home, Boston takes game 5 in their own building. Crazy. After losing 3 in ...

Top Secret Habs and Bruins Game 5 Player Updates
Posted on 23 Apr 2011 by Corey Krakower.
It looked like the Bruins were in big trouble after losing the first 2 games of the series on home ice, but they bounced back in Montreal and have tied the series at 2. It is now a best of 3 series, with game 5 being played tonight at the Garden. Even though the home team has lost all 4 games, this game is more important to the Bruins than it is to the Canadiens. If the Bruins lose tonight, the...
