Panthers: Loss To Butler, Worst In Team History
Posted on 20 Mar 2011 by Michael Waterloo.
The talk going into to each NCAA tournament, is that Pitt can't win the big game and fans won't believe in false hope until Pitt proves themselves. So this finally looked like the year that Pitt could do it. All of the experts felt that Pitt had the easiest run to the Final Four in the Southeast region. While many Pitt doubters didn't feel Pitt would make it to Houston and the Final Four,...

Is This The Year?
Posted on 15 Mar 2011 by Justin Welton.
I have said all year long that this is the best chance for Pitt to make the Final Four. They have veteran leadership with Brad Wanamaker, Gilbert Brown and Gary McGhee. Throw in the fact that Ashton Gibbs and Nasir Robinson have multiple experiences in the tournament, and you have one of the more experienced teams in the field. The field is the weakest that I can remember. The top five teams ar...

Pittsburgh/Connecticut Prediction
Posted on 9 Mar 2011 by Justin Welton.
Connecticut took full advantage of Georgetown being without point guard Chris Wright in today's 79-62 victory at Madison Square Garden. With the victory, UCONN will play Pittsburgh tomorrow at noon. The Panthers defeated UCONN 78-63 in Pittsburgh on December 27. Four players reached double-digits for the Panthers. Ashton Gibbs had 21 points, Brad Wanamaker had 14 and Nasir Robinson and Gary M...

Panthers Win Big East Regular Season Title
Posted on 6 Mar 2011 by Justin Welton.
Villanova has never won at the Petersen Events Center and that trend continued on Saturday. Pittsburgh (27-4, 15-3 Big East) won the Big East regular season championship outright on a day where they celebrated four seniors on senior day. It wasn’t brilliant, flashy or even fun to watch, but it was how the Panthers win games. They out-rebounded the Wildcats 30-22, which is what they are know...

Back to Square One

It was a classic Big East heavyweight fight. There was one punch thrown, 3 technicals, and 50 free throws taken. Their first meeting of the season, Villanova and Pittsburgh spent the first half feeling each other out. The second half brought jab after jab, both figuratively and literally, with Pittsburgh finally delivering the knockout blows to beat Villanova 57-54 on Saturday night at the Pavi...

With the Super Bowl in Pittsburgh’s rearview mirror, the city can finally focus on the Pittsburgh Panthers basketball program. The Panthers (22-1, 10-1 Big East) were without leading scorer Ashton Gibbs, but still managed to beat West Virginia (15-8, 6-5 Big East) 71-66 in Morgantown. Four of five Panthers starters were in double figures. Forward Nasir Robinson scored a team high 15 points an...

Achilles Heel For Panthers
Posted on 26 Jan 2011 by Justin Welton.
I like Gary McGhee of the Pittsburgh Panthers as a defender, but that is it. He struggles to finish plays on the offensive side of the floor, he can’t make free throws and he gets dominated by talented big men. He will, ultimately be the reason why Pittsburgh will not win the National Championship this season. But, if for just six games, McGhee can somehow find the touch to score around the r...

Pittsburgh beats up on Georgetown 72-57
Posted on 12 Jan 2011 by Justin Welton.
The Panthers (16-1) raced to a 41-24 lead after the first half Wednesday night at Georgetown. Ashton Gibbs shot 50 percent (5-10) from long distance in route to his game-high 22 points. Brad Wanamaker scored 14 points, Gilbert Brown scored 12 and Nasir Robinson scored 8 points. Aside from Gibbs and Wanamaker, I thought Gary McGhee and Travon Woodall played fantastic games. McGhee collected 9 ...

Pittsburgh and Duquesne renew annual “City Game” at CONSOL Energy Center tonight
Posted on 1 Dec 2010 by Justin Welton.
The Panthers lead the historic series 47-31, and have dominated in recent history winning 28 out of 31, including the past nine contests. The Dukes were considered to be more highly regarded than Pittsburgh back when the series began, but things have changed. The 79th addition of the “City Game” features the first regular season basketball game at CONSOL Energy Center. Pittsburgh (7-0) ha...
