One Week Later…
Posted on 5 Mar 2012 by Matt Preston.
Those who follow my rambling pontifications with any sort of regularity know I’m prone to three things: 1. Self-deprecation. 2. A propensity for using big words, often in the wrong context, to try and make myself look smart. 3. An over-reliance on clichés. And I have never been one to let a good trend just die, so here is one more: “Don’t quit your day job.” This little writing gig of ...

Boston Bruins Summer Playbook
Posted on 1 Jul 2011 by Jim Mulligan.
Over the years, I have argued that Bruins GM, Peter Chiarelli, has overpayed while paying for his team. I have written in this space that Andrew Ference, Tim Thomas, Zdeno Chara, Patrice Bergeron and Michael Ryder were all overpaid by at least $1M per player. Due to these overpayments, the Bruins were always up against the cap ceiling and could never get that Tomas Kaberle, puck moving defensem...

Who’s next you ask?

With the ninth overall pick, Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced the club has drafted 6’4’’ defenseman Dougie Hamilton with in the first round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Hamilton, a 6’4”, 193-pound defenseman has spent the past two seasons playing with the Niagara IceDogs in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). In 2010-2011 Hamilton tallied 12 goals and 46 assists...

Trade Deadline Preview…?
Posted on 20 Feb 2011 by Matt Preston.
The assignment: Come up with an analysis of your take on what your team’s game plan should be for the NHL’s impending trade deadline. Thank you, Peter Chiarelli, for throwing a wrench into that simple plan with all the dealing you did last week. Awesome. At least you finally got your man, Petey. What I really should be thanking Chiarelli for, though, is setting up this nice little game we a...

Time to Shut Savard Down

Following the NHL’s All-Star weekend which saw the Bruins Tim Thomas became the first goaltender to win three All-Star games and defenseman Zdeno Chara best his own mark in the hardest shot competition with a new record of 105.9 mph, the Bruins’ All-Stars were joined by their teammates in the game’s host city of Raleigh, NC, for the a showdown with the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday night...

What Will 2011 Bring?
Posted on 2 Jan 2011 by Matt Preston.
I’m not going to lie, I did not do a very good job fulfilling my obligations to this site last night as I opted to DVR the Boston Bruins-Buffalo Sabres tilt game in favor of the Winter Classic. The good news is as the Classic went on and the B’s score kept going by on the ticker I felt more and more confident I made the right decision. Especially when “BOS – 6, BUF – 6, End 3rd”...

Bruins go on the road – No suspension for Lucic
Posted on 26 Dec 2010 by Jim Mulligan.
After a less than successful three game homestand, the Claude Julien's Bruins are heading out on the road to tour the Southeast Division. With blizzard like conditions throughout New England today, the B's moved their practice up so they could get out of town before the weather prevented their charter from getting off the ground. The trip starts tomorrow in Sunrise, FL against the Panthers ...

Marco Sturm – Still not traded
Posted on 3 Dec 2010 by Jim Mulligan.
It looks like the ongoing saga of the Bruins, Kings and Marco Sturm has been put to rest…for the time being. In the five years he's been here, Marco has been happy as a Bruin but he does have an expiring contract with a no trade clause. He would make a good short term player for a team willing to ‘go the extra mile' for a Cup. He's got grit, decent speed (prior to the last knee inj...

Savvy Returns and the B’s Explode…Oh and Marco Sturm too
Posted on 3 Dec 2010 by Jim Mulligan.
After missing the first twenty three games Marc Savard returned to center a line with Tyler Seguin and Michael Ryder on his wings and oh boy did the Bruins find their offense. Seven different goal scorers (Krejci scored twice) helped two Lightning goaltenders get their necks sunburned from all the red lights shining behind them. The first period was a close, chippy period. Shawn Thornton was ve...

Boychuck out four weeks
Posted on 24 Oct 2010 by Jim Mulligan.
After taking a vicious slash from Brandon Dubinsky last night, Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli announced tonight that Bruins defenseman Johnny Boychuk suffered a slight fracture to his left ulna (bone in forearm) in the first period of last night's game with the Rangers. He missed a shift but returned to finish the first period. He did not return for the rest of the game. Boychuk is expected to b...
