Fresh Prince in Cincy
Posted on 10 Jun 2012 by Jeremy Klumpp.
The Tigers overcame a poor performance by Justin Verlander's standards to defeat the Cincinnati Reds 3-2 on Saturday afternoon. An eighth inning single by Prince Fielder off of Sean Marshall (1-2) scoring Brennan Boesch proved to be the game-winner. Verlander lasted six innings, but threw 127 pitches giving up six hits, three walks and two runs. Verlander did strike-out nine Reds batters, and ...

Prince and the Twin Cities
Posted on 27 May 2012 by Jeremy Klumpp.
After a three-game sweep at the hands of the Cleveland Indians, and a dismal 9-13 record in the month of May the Tigers needed a remedy. The Minnesota Twins appear to be that magical elixir. With their win Saturday afternoon in Minnesota the Tigers won back-to-back games for the first time since April 18th against the Kansas City Royals. In the first two games of their weekend series in Minne...

When In Rome, Mr. Pujols
Posted on 30 Apr 2012 by Steven Keys.
Change is good, so they say. And ya’ know who likes change? Marketing people like change, so do wet babies, unhappy workers, anyone living near a skateboarder, panhandlers and free agents. That's about it. When Prince Fielder and Albert Pujols made the big change this off-season it wasn’t because they were unhappy campers. Quite the contrary. Both were much loved and rather cozy in their ...

Tigers Smylyn Tonight
Posted on 17 Apr 2012 by Brett Decker.
Drew Smyly showed quite a few good things for the Tigers tonight. He showed how great his stuff is and how well he can control it as well as his toughness, both physically and mentally (after taking a line drive in the back and a 14 pitch at bat against Brayan Pena). He clearly showed why he beat out Duane Below for the last spot in the starting rotation out of spring training. If this is the q...

Verlander tosses CG to get first win
Posted on 17 Apr 2012 by Brett Decker.
Justin Verlander had an interesting outing tonight against the Royals and Danny Duffy. Justin started out losing his no-hitter on the first batter (which is not very common for Justin) Alex Gordon who laced a double down the line. Then Chris Getz did what all real #2 hitters should do (pay attention Leyland) and sac bunted Gordon to third. Then Verlander pitched around the Royals young stud 1...

I’ll Take It
Posted on 13 Apr 2012 by Brett Decker.
I'll Take It! should be the attitude that every Tiger fan, and really every Tigers player as well, has about the recently completed series with Tampa. While there were times through these three games that Detroit seemed dominant; the overall series was really a knock down, drag out fight between two almost evenly matched likely playoff participants and world series contenders. The deepest and a...

Pujols Punctuates New Era
Posted on 31 Jan 2012 by Steven Keys.
You can’t see it, can’t hear it and can’t smell it, but it’s there. Baseball’s in the air. Spring training’s over a month away (MRD / 3-2) but the big deals are done and the temps are heating-up in southern climes. Before you know it the sound of ball smacking leather (Rawlings & glove) will fill the air at parks around the country. Until then there’s plenty of sporting fare t...

Time for NL to Reconsider DH
Posted on 28 Jan 2012 by Christopher Rowe.
Ever since 1973, American and National League baseball has played by two sets of rules. In either league, three strikes is an out, three outs to an inning and 9 innings to a game. You will see no deviance regarding the infield fly rule and aside from ground rule doubles (which are defined by all 30 stadiums individually) the game basically appears identical. Despite the fact that nowhere else o...

Where the Jays Stand – Right Field
Posted on 5 Dec 2011 by Ben Fisher.
As the Winter meetings get going in Dallas, our weekly look at how the Jays are set up around the diamond zones in on one of the team’s central selling points to free agents: the opportunity to play alongside Jose Bautista. Before we get to that, I’ll try to separate myth from fact and look at what is real amidst all the speculation coming out of Dallas: What Would Make the Winter Meetings ...

Jays Gear Up for Free Agency
Posted on 2 Nov 2011 by Ben Fisher.
MLB free agency opens tonight (well, technically tomorrow) at 12:01am EST with a laundry list of available names that you can undoubtedly already recite in your sleep (Pujols, Fielder, Reyes, Wilson, Ortiz, etc.). The Jays, armed with a fully returning front office, will certainly be doing their due diligence on several of the available marquee names and, as SI’s Jon Heyman recently reported,...

$ports v$ Ecomony – Dollar$ & $ense
Posted on 24 Oct 2011 by Christopher Rowe.
Somewhere between the latest incarnation of SONY Playstation and Star Trek’s Holodeck could be the salvation of our modern economic woes. Trillions and trillions of dollars are spent on the sports industry. $300 million dollar player contracts, multi-billion dollar palaces, billions of public dollars spent to attract and then lose relocated franchises, bidding on Super Bowls to boost the loca...

Where the Jays Stand – First Base
Posted on 17 Oct 2011 by Ben Fisher.
In the second part of our position-by-position series evaluating the Toronto Blue Jays on their 2011 season and looking ahead to 2012, we look at the organization’s first baseman. Initially thought to be a source of stability and long-term growth, Adam Lind’s slide dating back to 2010 has left the position far less of a certainty. The 2011 Guy(s) Starter: Adam Lind Back-Up: Edwin Encarnacio...
