Canes Comeback Falls Short in OT
Posted on 10 Mar 2011 by Brad Kurtzberg.
The Carolina Hurricanes overcame an early 2-0 deficit and managed to force overtime before bowing to the visiting Atlanta Thrashers Wednesday night. Tim Stapleton scored the game winning goal at the 1:38 mark of the extra session. The Canes had not played since last Friday and it was clear early that instead of being rested, the five days off made Paul Maurice's club rusty. It also made them ...

Senators the latest victim for the Islanders
Posted on 16 Feb 2011 by Dave Thomas.
Don't look now, but the New York Islanders are one of the hottest teams in the National Hockey League. New York won its fourth straight game Tuesday night, posting a 4-3 shootout victory over the host Ottawa Senators. Michael Grabner (leads all rookies with 25 goals on the season) continued his hot streak, notching a goal in his sixth straight game for the team from Long Island. Meantime, Rob ...

Islanders lose to Maple Leafs; Poulin lost for season
Posted on 9 Feb 2011 by Dave Thomas.
Thought the New York Islanders had goalie problems before? Things went from bad to worse for the Islanders Tuesday evening on Long Island in a loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs before the puck even dropped. Not only did New York miss out on points, but it also lost goalie Kevin Poulin for the remainder of the season (see below) in its 5-3 setback to one of the original six teams. Winners of four...

(the curse of the) Player Profile: Brandon Prust
Posted on 11 Jan 2011 by Adam Gavriel.
So what do you know, it seems that my “Player Profile” series has taken on it's own version of the Madden curse. Two weeks ago I wrote an article on Del Zotto, now, he's fine tuning his talents in the AHL. Rozsival last week, traded yesterday. You may be asking yourself, Adam, if your posts are cursed why would you do a player like Prust and not Christensen? Well, I debated that que...

Islanders stop Crosby and the Pens, score 2-1 win
Posted on 30 Dec 2010 by Dave Thomas.
The New York Islanders have not had much reason to celebrate this season to date, but Wednesday evening on Long Island was another story. With the perennial power Pittsburgh Penguins and star Sidney Crosby in Uniondale, the Islanders got the last laugh in a 2-1 shootout victory at Nassau Coliseum. New York Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro (39) looks to block a shot during a 2-1 shootout win over ...

Rangers send Islanders back to reality, roll to 7-2 win
Posted on 28 Dec 2010 by Dave Thomas.
Just as the New York Islanders started feeling a little bit better about themselves having gone 4-0-1 in their last five contests, well, the rival New York Rangers had to play the role of party poopers Monday evening at Madison Square Garden. Matt Gilroy tallied a pair of goals, while the Rangers fired a staggering 52 shots, en route to an easy 7-2 win over their rivals from Long Island. Michae...

Just when you thought the New York Islanders might be turning a corner, think again. Then again, they may have found a diamond in the rough. With rookie goalie Nathan Lawson in the pipes for the Islanders, New York saw its short one-game winning streak go by the wayside Saturday night in a 4-3 (shootout) loss to the visiting Phoenix Coyotes on Long Island. Kyle Turris tallied Phoenix’s third...

Powerless: Special Teams Cost Isles in 5-2 Loss to Bruins
Posted on 10 Dec 2010 by Patrick Creighton.
The Islanders surrendered 3 special teams goals (2 power play, 1 shorthanded) and 2 empty netters in a 5-2 loss to the Boston Bruins last night at TD Garden. The Islanders, who got off to a fast start behind effective special teams, have seen that efficiency desert them, and they haven't been able to recover. Two more power play goals allowed (Boston was 2-5 on the night) and the Islanders ow...

Bruins keep Islanders stuck in new slump, win 5-2
Posted on 9 Dec 2010 by Dave Thomas.
The New York Islanders will win again…some day…trust me. Repeating an all too often familiar scene, the Islanders fell again Thursday evening in New England, dropping a 5-2 decision to the Boston Bruins. Boston extended the Islanders' futility to 1-15-3 in their past 19 games. New York, which has dropped 11 straight road games, hasn't won since topping New Jersey at home the da...

Posted on 3 Dec 2010 by Patrick Creighton.
Marian Gaborik's 12th career NHL Hat Trick and second of the season helped lead the Rangers to a 6-5 victory last night over the Islanders at the Nassau Coliseum. It was a roller coaster game of highs and lows for the Isles, who fell behind early 2-0 in the 1st period, then came back to take a 3-2 second period lead, fell behind 5-3 in the 3rd, then rallied to tie, before Gaborik's third goal o...

Now with their first win following a 14-game winless streak, the New York Islanders have their sights set on Thursday night and making it two in a row when they host the rival New York Islanders on Long Island. The Islanders snapped the second longest winless streak in team history this past Friday evening, scoring a 2-0 win over the New Jersey Devils on Long Island. The Islanders celebrated t...
