Devils Fall to Penguins 4-2
Posted on 6 Apr 2011 by Matt Pellicane.
Although the New Jersey Devils played a better game than their effort on Saturday, the end result was the same as they suffered a 4-2 loss to their Atlantic Division rivals, the Pittsburgh Penguins The Penguins got two goals from Pascal Dupuis, the second being a shorthanded empty-netter that squashed any hopes the Devils had of tying the game and sending it to overtime. The Devils were on th...

Shirts Off Our Backs, Pens Win
Posted on 5 Apr 2011 by Dustin Keener.
Tonight is Fan appreciation night in Pittsburgh. Each year fans at the last home game of the season have a chance to win a sweaty, game worn jersey right off of the back of their favorite players. The whole night is a celebration, and the celebration is much better when the Penguins can pull off a win. Tonight, it will be a great celebration, as the Pens pulled together and beat the riv...

Are Lightning Playoff Bound? Lose 4-3 to the Hurricanes
Posted on 26 Mar 2011 by Christopher Tran.
Another game, another inconsistent effort resulting in a loss to Southeast Division rivals Carolina Hurricanes during a back-to-back home-and-home series. The Eric (Staal) and Erik (Cole) pairing combined for three goals for the Hurricane offense which helped propel them over the struggling Tampa Bay Lightning and keep their postseason aspirations alive. This dual ended up putting the Hurricane...

I Hope Lidstrom Picks Skinner
Posted on 27 Jan 2011 by Eric Cooney.
“What kind of Hurricanes fan are you?” you might be asking. Look, I'm all for Skinner and Ward joining team Staal and representing the hometown Hurricanes, but it's an exhibition game. It's not like this is baseball where the meaning of the All-Star Game actually extends beyond personal bragging rights and a new Dodge, excuse me, Honda car for the game's MVP. (more…)

Royal Pains: Isles Blanked By King Henrik In 2-0 Loss
Posted on 4 Dec 2010 by Patrick Creighton.
Henrik Lundqvist's 4th shutout of the year made Mark Staal's second period goal stand up as the Rangers defeated the Islanders 2-0 at Madison Square Garden yesterday to complete the sweep of the home and home series. Brian Boyle's empty netter with 2.6 seconds remaining accounted for the final margin. One night after scoring 5 goals, and mounting comebacks after falling behind by 2 goals twic...

Eric Staal is 500 ft Tall
Posted on 29 Jul 2010 by Chris Cote.
Okay, so maybe he's not going to be knocking over buildings or breathing fire all over Japanese tanks (though we can't disprove that theory), but he IS plastered on the side of the tallest building in Raleigh. As part of a promotion for the 2010 NHL All-Star Game in Raleigh, the Hurricanes and the NHL have placed a 5000 square foot poster on the side of the RBC Plaza in downtown Raleigh. The ...

The Off-Season Thus Far
Posted on 14 Jul 2010 by Chris Cote.
Let's review, shall we? Jim Rutherford's shopping list this off-season was fairly light, with the Canes needing a few cheap, reliable defensemen, a veteran 3rd line center and (had the budget been there) a top line winger. For the most part however, the name of the game was to simply hang on to all the young guys and stock up the Charlotte Checkers. Now, due to Karmanos setting the budget ...

A Very Good Day Indeed
Posted on 28 Jun 2010 by Chris Cote.
Well, another draft has come and gone for the Hurricanes, and this fan couldn't be happier. Unlike in previous years, where Rutherford drafted some head-scratchers, (Phillipe Paradis? Igor Knyazev?) this time around the Canes go solid picks straight through the entire draft. It is unfortunate, however, that the Canes didn't manage to get another First round pick. They were offering all thre...

Don’t Expect Much…
Posted on 15 Jun 2010 by Chris Cote.
With free agency just weeks away, and the departure of Ray Whitney looking imminent, it seems only natural that Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford would be looking to nab a legit top line winger to play alongside Eric Staal. Right? Well, apparently not. In a recent interview GM Rutherford said that the Hurricanes will not get involved in the first wave of free agency, but might be part of the secon...

The Draft: Top 3 Picks Since 2003
Posted on 7 Jun 2010 by Eric Cooney.
Predicting what will happen on Draft day is about as easy as picking where lightning will strike. Even more foggy is how those picks will pan out. We all know about busts like Alexandre Daigle and Patrik Stefan, but I'm going to take a look at the top 3 picks from each NHL Entry Draft since 2003. (more…)

All in the Family
Posted on 13 May 2010 by Chris Cote.
The Hurricanes took their first step towards uniting Eric and the Family Staal today as the acquired the rights to Jared Staal for a 5th round draft pick. In 59 games this season with the Sudbury Wolves, Jared racked up 49 points and 57 Penalty minutes. To put that in perspective, that's 5 more points in 4 fewer games than 2009 1st round pick Philippe Paradis, who was traded to Toronto for Ji...
